[02] Greece unveils 1.2-bln-euro agrotourism programme

    12/07/2002 23:39:48

''We have the highest growth rate in the EU, but that's not enough for us,'' Prime Minister Costas Simitis said on Friday, unveiling an ambitious agro-tourism programme worth 1.2 billion euros.

Speaking to reporters, after a meeting of cabinet committee for the development of the countryside, Mr Simitis presented the four axis of a government programme to promote agro-tourism in Greece.

    These were:

-promoting tourist programmes in the five cities that will host Olympic Games events (Olympia, Thessaloniki, Volos, Patras, Heraclion),

-approving 125 integrated programmes envisaging tourist development in mountainous, island and underdeveloped regions of the country with emphasis given in the regions of Evros, Rodopi and Drama,

-implementing a certification programme for agricultural products and,

-implementing immediately a LEADER+ programme to fund hotel infrastructure and other tourist events.

Agriculture Minister George Drys said the basic target of agrotourism was to interconnect Greek farm products with the Athens 2004 Olympic Games.

The cabinet committee also approved the formation of a Special Coordinating Committee to promote tourist development in the countryside.
