[02] Cyprus Archbishop arrives at Evangelismos hospital in Athens

    11/05/2002 19:10:12

The Archbishop of Cyprus Chrysostomos arrived in Athens on Saturday and was admitted to a specialist intensive care ward at Evangelismos Hospital at 18:00, after his departure from Nicosia in a specially equipped aircraft at 15:30.

The Archbishop, whose health had deteriorated rapidly since Friday, was transferred to the Athens hospital at the advice of his doctors and two British specialists who examined him on Saturday morning.

Chrysostomos had been in Nicosia's General Hospital since the Saturday before Easter, following a head injury caused by a fall down some stairs.

The Cyprus Archbishop arrived at Athens airport at 17:15 accompanied by the director of Nicosia's General Hospital Costas Zabartas, and was immediately taken to Evangelismos in an ambulance.

According to Evangelismos director P. Alexopoulos, the Archbishop's condition was fairly good, he seemed aware of his surroundings and was able to communicate with the doctors and nurses accompanying him.

The hospital said an announcement regarding the Archbishop's health would be made late on Saturday evening.

According to the medical team in Nicosia, the move to Athens was decided when Chrysostomos developed a high fever after doctors were forced to cut down his medication to avoid damage to his liver.

[03] Mother of twins dies due to complications in childbirth

    11/05/2002 18:50:06

A 26-year-old woman died just a few days after giving birth to two premature babies, following complications during the birth.

The young woman, whose identity was not revealed, died at Thessaloniki's Ippokration hospital on Friday after her pregnancy was terminated in its 27th week.

Originally carrying triplets, the woman had been admitted to the hospital on May 6 for tests, during which it was determined that one of the three babies had died. Doctors decided to perform a caesarian section to end the pregnancy and remove the dead fetus.

After the operation, however, her health deteriorated rapidly and she died. According to a coroner's report, her death was due to an embolism caused by amniotic fluid.

The two babies are still being treated at the hospital, where doctors are sanguine about their chances of survival.
