    A man in Thessaloniki was attacked on Thursday for refusing to turn off his stereo by an enraged neighbour who claimed to be in mourning for a deceased relative.

    According to Michalis Baskintzis, 35, an unknown neighbour came to his house on Wednesday night during a name-day party, and asked him to turn off the music because he was mourning a relative in the building opposite.

    Baskintzis refused to turn the music off but promised to turn down the volume, whereupon the other man attacked him, striking him on the face and hands, stormed into the apartment and damaged Baskintzis' stereo and speakers.

    The Ano Polis police station is making an inquiry.

    The arrest of a two-man gang, including one Egyptian national, operating in Piraeus port and targetting unsuspecting foreigners was reported by police on Thursday.

    Egyptian Ali Hissan, 35, and his Greek accomplice Costas Karvounis, 28, worked by impersonating police officers and pretended to stop foreigners arriving in Greece for routine checks. They would then make their victims get into a car on the pretext that they were taking them to the police station and rob them of money and jewellery.

    Police caught the pair after a surveillance operation lasing several months.

    [03] Athens Stock Exchange opening: bourse edges up

    Equities were slowly rising at the opening of trade Thursday on the Athens Stock Exchange, with the general index up 0.23 percent at 2,696.77 points and turnover at 11.5 million euro, with 2.5 million euro in block trades.

    Performance in individual sector indices was mixed, with the biggest gains for the IT and solutions index, up 1.34 per cent, and the biggest losses for the telecoms index, down 0.78 per cent.

    The FTSE/ASE 20 index for blue chip and heavily traded stocks was up 0.33 percent, the FTSE/ASE MID 40 index was up 0.37 percent, and the FTSE/ASE SMALLCAP index was up 0.37 percent.

    Of the stocks moved, 182 were up, 56 were down and 140 were unchanged.

    The day will start sunny in all parts of the country on Thursday with scattered cloud on the mainland from the afternoon that may lead to storms in the north. Winds north-northeasterly, moderate in the west, strong in the east, turning to very strong over the Aegean and dying down toward evening. In the west and Ionian, temperatures will range from 17C to 35C; in the rest of the country from 16C to 32C; and in the Aegean from 23C to 29C. In Athens, the weather will be sunny, winds moderate rising to very strong in the east with temperatures between 21C and 32C. Scattered cloud in Thessaloniki, possibly rain in the afternoon, with temperatures from 18C to 30C.
