    Olympiakos Piraeus beat OFI Iraklion 2-1 away in a match played for the Greek national soccer division on Sunday night.

    In other matches played earlier, AEK Athens beat Athinaikos 3-0 away, PAOK Thessaloniki subdued national division newcomers Ioannina 3-1 away, Ethnikos Asteras beat Ionikos 1-0, Aris Thessaloniki edged Paniliakos 1-0 and Iraklis Thessaloniki beat Panachaiki 2-0, while Panathinaikos Athens beat Panionios 2-0 away on Saturday. Xanthi and Kalamata will play on Monday.

    Standings after two rounds played: Olympiakos Piraeus 6 points, Panathinaikos Athens 6, Aris Thessaloniki 6, AEK Athens 6, PAOK Thessaloniki 4, Iraklis Thessaloniki 3, Ionikos 3 and Ethnikos Asteras 3.

    [02] Greece-Australia-Sports cooperation

    SYDNEY (ANA - D. Efstathiou/G. Mantaios) - Greek Deputy Sports Minister George Floridis and Australian Sports Committee executive director Jim Ferguson signed a sports cooperation memorandum between Greece and Australia in Sydney over the weekend.

    The memorandum, aimed at further strengthening bilateral relations in the sports, anticipates, among others, the transfer of know-how, mutual visits by sports officials, the exchange of sports training programmes and information on developing sports, sports research, organising joint symposiums, conferences and conventions and promoting trade relations between the two countries in the framework of organising the Olympic Games.

    After the signing, Floridis hosted a dinner in honour of the Australian officials at the Athens 2004 Organising Committee's hospitality centre.

    [03] Ioannina-Hunter-Policeman-Accidental killing

    Ioannis Rizos, 18, accidentally shot dead Vassilis Rizos, 39, a policeman and relative of his, on Sunday after mistaking him for a wild boar.

    Both were among a group of nine hunters who had gone hunting in a forested area in Konitsa in the prefecture of Ioannina, northern Greece. The policeman was shot with a hunting rifle and died while being taken to hospital in the city of Ioannina.

    Greece's Dimosthenis Tampakos took the silver medal Sunday in the men's gymnastics rings at the Sydney Olympic Games.

    Tampakos took the silver with a score of 9,762 after an impressive routine ending with a double somersault and a perfect landing.

    Greek weightlifter Akakios Kakiasvilis took home the gold medal in the 94-kilo category at the Olympic Games in Sydney on Sunday, becoming only the third weightlifter in history to win gold medals in three successive Olympics.

    Kakiasvili lifted 185 kilograns in the snatch and 220 kilograms in the clean and jerk.

    Greece's Pyrros Dimas became the second treble winner in history when he won the gold in the 85 kilo category on Saturday, matching the record of Turkish legend Naim Suleimanoglou.
