    [03] November 17-murder

    09/06/2000 09:52:03

The elusive November 17 terrorist organisation claimed responsibility on Friday for the murder of British Defence Attache in Athens, Brigadier Stephen Saunders.

Saunders was gunned down by one of two assailants riding a motorcycle in the traffic-congested Kifissias avenue early Thursday morning as the diplomat was driving alone to his office at the British embassy in central Athens.

In a long 13-page proclamation sent to the Athens afternoon daily Eleftherotypia, the text of which was fully published by the newspaper, the urban guerrilla organisation accused Saunders of "activly participating and coordinating the NATO air raids and bombings of Serbia" last year.
