    Olympiakos Piraeus formally won the Greek first division soccer championship on Sunday, last day of the season. It has won the championship in four consecutive years. Olympiakos finished first with 92 points, four points ahead of arch-rival Panathinaikos.

    BREMEN, Germany (ANA) - Greek athlete Dimosthenis Tambakos won on Sunday the gold medal in the rings in the men's European gymnastics chmpionships. He garnered 9.737 points, followed by Hungary's Szilvester Csollany (9.675) and Belarus' Ivan Ivankov (9.650).

    TIRANA (ANA) - A large delegation from the Greek Embassy in Tirana visited the city of Berat on Saturday, accompanied by representatives of Greek banks based in Albania and by members of the Greek-Albanian Chamber.

    The Greek delegation's visit to the historical city was at the invitation of the city's Commercial and Industrial Chamber.

    During the visit, the Greek delegation held talks with local officials and businessmen who referred to the region's investment potential in such sectors as tourism, olive oil, fruit, tobacco, wood and construction material.

    Greek Ambassador to Tirana Al. Mallias, who headed the Greek delegation, said that Greek investments in Albania, directly or through joint veures, will double in the 2000-2001 period.

    An Iraqi national was arrested for allegedly holding hostage nine compatriots in an Athens apartment, demanding 2,000 US dollars from each for their release, police said on Sunday.

    The man, identified as Vai Avora, 26, was working with five accomplices when he received the immigrants at the port of Piraeus and took them to the apartment near the Acropolis.

    OTTAWA (ANA-N.Voulelis) - President of the Republic Kostis Stephanopoulos on Monday begins an official visit to Canada for talks with government leaders following a warm welcome by the Greek community when he arrived in the capital at the weekend.

    It is Stephanopoulos' first visit to Canada, and the first by a Greek head of state since 1978.

    Culture Minister Theodoros Pangalos will launch the revived Nemean Games on Saturday at the city of Nemea's ancient stadium, marking the second time the games are held since antiquity.

    The two days of athletic and cultural events are being held under the aegis of the national defence ministry and University of Berkeley, California.

    An opinion poll commissioned by the Sunday Eleftherotypia newspaper showed that 56.8 percent of respondents believe religious affiliation should appear on police-issued identity cards carried by the public, with 37.8 percent disagreeing.

    At the same time, 46.1 percent of those polled backed Prime Minister Costas Simitis' decision to have the religion category removed from IDs in order to protect the privacy of personal data, according to the survey conducted by Metron Analysis in Attica and published in the newspaper on Sunday.
