[01] President-Election
07/02/2000 11:48:01
Parliament is set to re-elect Costis Stephanopoulos as President of the
Republic on Tuesday afternoon for a second five-year term with an
overwhelming majority, as both the ruling PASOK party and main
opposition New Democracy party have endorsed his election. The only
other candidate is Leonidas Kyrkos, nominated by the small Coalition of
Left and Progress Party. The two other parliamentary parties -- the
Democratic Social Movement and the Communist Party of Greece, are both
expected to abstain.
[02] Poll-Elections
07/02/2000 11:47:57
In the latest of a flood of opinion polls, the main opposition New
Democracy party was leading by 1.2 percentage points over the ruling
PASOK party in voter preference, although 54.6 percent of those polled
believed PASOK would win the early general elections, set for April 9.
A poll by ALKO published in Monday's edition of ETHNOS newspaper showed
ND leading nationwide with 33 percent against 31.8 percent for PASOK
and 15.4 percent undecided. The same poll showed PASOK leading,
however, by 7.2 percentage points in the greater Athens area with 32.2
percent against 25 percent for ND, and the main opposition party
leading by 4.7 percentage points in the rest of the country with 36.3
percent against 31.6 percent for PASOK.
