NEWS IN DETAIL

Government says no change on Moslem minority

The Greek government said on Thursday that its position on the issue of the Moslem minority of Thrace was "clear, known and unchanged", namely that such a minority existed and was a religious one. Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas made the statement when asked by reporters to comment on remarks by Foreign Minister George Papandreou in an interview with the monthly magazine "Klik" and speaking today on "Flash" radio. Reppas stressed that as far as Greece was concerned there could be no question of the minority in Thrace being designated in any way other than 'Moslem'.

PM Simitis to Sarajevo on Friday

Prime Minister Costas Simitis leaves for Sarajevo early on Friday to attend the Balkan Stability Pact summit in the Bosnian capital, government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said. Reppas said the Greek side would attempt to have the final resolutions include certain views which would contribute to the resolution of problems which have been created in the region. He noted that the stability pact had three components: the provision of humanitarian aid; the provision of economic aid for reconstruction; and the introduction and conslidation of democratic parliamentary institutions.

Police seek dead horse owner

Thessaloniki police are searching for the owner of a horse involved in a fatal traffic accident. The horse and the driver of an oncoming car were both killed in the accident. The incident occurred Wednesday on the Thessaloniki-Kilkis stretch of the national highway, when an oncoming car rammed into the horse, which was crossing the highway at the time. The driver, 35-year-old Vassilis Kamberis, and the horse were both killed on impact. The horse's owner faces charges of unintentional manslaughter. However, a Thessaloniki police officer told ANA, it was possible the horse was one of the hundreds of strays roaming the Macedonia valley.
