[01] SimitisAfter three weeks of holidays on the Aegean island of Sifnos, prime minister Kostas Simitis and his wife Daphne returned to Athens Tuesday evening.The premier's holidays were interrupted early August due to fires which devastated thousands of acres in Attica. It is expected that in the next few days governmental and party activities will re- start once the ministers and the ruling party MP's also return from their holidays. [02] Military serviceArmy soldiers will be obliged to serve a 9-month term in border regions, Defence minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos told reporters Tuesday.The measure will concern soldiers who will be inducted into the army from September. The defence minister specified that these soldiers will be able to get a few-days obligatory leave every two months, which will not be added to their usual leave. Soldiers will be also able to go home during these few-day leaves with specially reduced tickets on all forms of transport. The obligatory 9-month term in border regions will be made only by soldiers who serve in the army. Tsochatzopoulos told reporters that with this measure, the government will achieves its aim of integrity and fairness in the military. "The same procedures will be followed by everyone, with no exception", he said. [03] 4th World Congress of ThraceThe 4th World Congress of Thrace was held recently in the city of Orestiada. Hundreds of Greeks from Orestiada living in Greece and abroad participated in the event.The congress aimed to promote the region of Thrace world-wide, and to find solutions to problems in both the economic and cultural fields. "Thrace in front of the 3d millenium" was the main theme of the 4th World Congress of Thracians which was held in the city of Orestiada from August 15th to 18th. The congress aimed for the world-wide promotion of the history, civilisation, needs and prospects of hellenism in Thrace. Anastasios Anagnostou, mayor of Orestiada, said, "The aim of this congress was to register the problems the region of Thrace faces, to propose and promote solutions to these problems and in general to give new prospects to the region". The president of the "Mihaniki Inc" company Prodromos Emfietzoglou talked about the business possibilities offered by the geographical location of the region. He said that Thrace is a crossroads connecting the West to the East and the North to the South. Four hundred representatives from associations and unions world-wide with Thracian origins took part in the congress showing a high interest in general developments and prosperity in the region. [04] Photographer Nelly died at 99A legend in photography, Nelly Souyoutzoglou- Seraidari died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 99 years.The pioneering photographer, who was born in Aidini in Asia Minor, and whose work spans almost a century, captured many famous political and artistic figures with her lens. Nelly was born in 1899 in the Greek city of Aidini on the coast of Asia Minor. At the age of 21 she went to Dresden in Germany to study painting and piano. She soon turned to photography, which had the added bonus of being more lucrative. She embarked on her photographic career in 1922 when the Turks were decimating Smyrni and other Greek cities on the Asia Minor coast. The Turks had burnt Nelly's birthplace in 1920. Nelly's photos capture the pain of refugees, but also cover various subjects such as famous figures like Eleftherios Venizelos and Kostis Palamas, and many depict Athens in years gone by. The photographer shook public opinion with her picture showing dancer Mona Paiva dancing nude amongst the Parthenon pillars in 1927. In 1939 Nelly moved to New York with her husband where they lived for 27 years before returning to Athens. Souyoutzoglou's funeral will be held with state honours on Thursday at the Nea Smyrni cemetery in Athens. [05] 17th Paneuropean Track and field ChampionshipWednesday showed good results again for Greek athletes participating in the European Track-and-Field Championship held in Budapest, Hungary this week.23 yr. old runner Katerina Thanou won the bronze medal in the womens 100 meter with a 10.87 second time which was a Pan Hellenic record. In the women's 100 meters semi-final Katerina Thanou broke a Pan Hellenic record and finished in second position with 10.92 seconds. She went on to come third in the final race, beating her record time by 4 seconds. There was another second position for runner Haris Papadias in the men's 100 meters. Papdias also qualified for the finals with a time of 10.21 seconds. Olga Vasdeki and Voula Tsiamata qualified for the finals in the women's triple jump, which will be held on Thursday. Vasdeki made a 14.59 meter jump and Tsiamita cleared 14. 23 meters. In the men's high jump, Dimitris Kokotis qualified for the finals, and Kostas Kenderis qualified for the semi-finals in the men's 400 meters. In the women's discus, three Greek athletes qualified for the finals : Katerina Vongoli with a 62.33 meters throw, Tasoula Kelesidou with a throw of 61.55 meters and Stella Tsikouna with 61.46 meters.
