TURKEY REVIEWThe Greek government said Friday that Greece will NOT accept Turkey trying to introduce its claims against Greece's sovereign rights in the experts committee.The Greek government spokesman said specifically, that Greece will NOT discuss matters that touch on its internationally-recognised Aegean rights. THEODORAKISGermany's foreign minister said this week that Greece and Turkey must be brought closer together. Klaus Kinkel added that his country can play a role in bridging the gulf between the two countries.Hosting a concert by Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, and Turkish composer Jules Livanelli Kinkel said that perhaps music can help achieve a rapprochement that politics cannot. Klaus Kinkel brought Theodorakis and Livanelli together in Bonn, in the hope that he might thus help bring their countries - Greece and Turkey - toghether as well. The two distinguised composers put their musical genius at the service of achieving understanding between their nations. Theodorakis said "We have no illusions. We don't believe we'll change the world with songs. We just want to sensitise people, to make them see that we CAN work together". 200 Germans, Greeks and Turks attended the event organised by Kinkel. "Greece and Turkey should get closer to each other", he said, talking about why he'd sponsored the event. He added, "Their problems must be surmounted. When I say that I'm intervening toward that end, I don't mean I'm INTERFERING in their affairs. I'm just saying that Germany can help things move forward. And when that's not possible through politics, it may be possible through culture, which is why I held this event tonight". In Bonn, music was used as a way of getting a political message across: that the two countries should try to work out their problems. Theodorakis says that dialogue with a nation you have problems with doesn't necessarily mean treason, compromise, or giving up your territorial rights. TROOPS REVIEWThe final group of Greek troops joining the multi- national peacekeeping force in Albania arrived in Durres Friday, on board two ships, the Kos and the Chios.After disembarking with 70 vehicles, the 95 soldiers went to the bases of Isberis and Vassiar, just outside Tirane, to join other Greek peacekeepers. Another group of Greeks are stationed at the southern port of Vlore. Friday's arrivals bring the total number of Greeks stationed in Albania to 720. ALBANIANS REVIEWLast weekend, Greek troops in Albania celebrated the orthodox Easter. The Greek men were all safe.Unfortunately though, a Greek coast guard officer lost his life at the hands of Albanian drug and gun smugglers off the coast of the island of Corfu. Family, friends, and colleagues of 22-year-old Marinos Zambatis attended his funeral in Levkada on Easter Sunday. Zambatis was shot by the smugglers when his patrol boat came across their small speedboat in a small cove in northern Corfu, not far from the Albanian coast Saturday. The Greek coast guard and navy are on alert in the region, prepared for further incidents. The Greek patrol boast was forced to give up the chase after Saturday's shooting, to take the wounded man to the hospital. Zambatis died en route. The perpetrators are still at large, though Friday Greek police brought an Albanian in for questioning. He had checked into a hospital in Iannena with a gunshot wound in the hand after last Saturday's incident. A second incident occurred in Corfu on Thursday. Another coast guard patrol spotted what the authorities believe was the same smugglers' boat. The Albanians on board opened fire on the Greek patrol, and escaped back to Albania. MAY DAY REVIEWAnd finally, Greece celebrated May Day this week. The city of Athens used the spring theme of May First to show how much it wants to host the 2004 summer Olympics.Thousands of spring flowers were used to make a gigantic flower, and a representation of the Athens 2004 logo... a virtual carpet of petals at Panathinaikos stadium, site of the first modern Olympics. And this year's event is going to become a tradition. Mayor Dimitris Avramopoulos said, "We're sending a floral message of festivity to the world".
