  • A message of hope: Tassos Isaac's daughter baptised in Cyprus.
  • After its European championship, Olymiakos takes care of business at home.
  • And, some special Easter traditions.

EU/TURKEY ASSOC.COUNCIL

Greece stuck to its veto of European Union funding of Turkey Tuesday.

The much-awaited EU-Turkey Association Council convened in Luxembourg, the Greek foreign minister saying that Ankara's refractory stance means Turkey WON'T be getting the 375 million Ecus the EU has set aside for it.

ALBANIA/GR.TROOPS

The last contingent of Greek troops left for Albania Tuesday. Some 90 peacekeepers and 70 vehicles set sail from Thessaloniki - destination: Durres.

The men on board the "Kos" and the "Chios" will join the 600 plus Greek troops already in Albania.

Family and friends were on hand to say goodbye to the men of the 601st infantry.

One father said he's not worried about his son's well-being. "I have one boy in the army, and one in the navy. And I was also an officer".

One soldier said he's counting not only on the support of the troops already in Albania, but also on the Albanian people, to boost the troops' morale.

This final group of peacekeepers is the maintenance team, they'll be providing logistical support to the other troops, charged with protecting international aid shipments arriving in Albania.

The peacekeepers hope that their presence will help Albania return to normal, after months of upheavel.

On Tuesday, many schools reopened - they'd been closed since a state of emergency was declared on March second.

Students and teachers were happy to be back in the classrooms. At the University of Tirane, attendance was 80 per cent on the first day back.

ALBANIA/COAST GUARD KILLED

Greek troops in Albania were all safe this Easter. But a Greek coast guard officer lost his life at the hands of Albanian drug and gun smugglers.

Family, friends, and colleagues of 22-year-old Marinos Zambatis attended his funeral in Levkada on Easter Sunday.

Zambatis was shot by the smugglers when his patrol boat came across their small speedboat in a small cove in northern Corfu, not far from the Albanian coast Saturday.

The Greek coast guard and navy are on alert in the region, prepared for further incidents.

The six smugglers are at large. The Greek patrol boast was forced to give up the chase, to take the wounded man to the hospital. Zambatis died en route.

PIANO RECITAL

Three Greek-Americans brought the splendour of Mozart to life at New York's Lincoln Centre.

Like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, two of them were child prodigies.

Before a demanding audience, many of them children, Dinos Anegnos conducted young Alexandros Fondie, who, like Mozart, plays the piano and the violin.

Athina Adamopoulou, another prodigy at the age of ten, played a concerto written by Mozart when he was the same age.

After the serious business was over, well, kids will be kids - they had a party to enjoy themselves in the manner their tender age is more accustomed to.

TOKAS CONCERT

Athenians recently heard sublime music at a concert in the Metropolitan Cathedral Square.

With candles in their hands, they listened devoutly to Manolis Mitsias, Kostas Hatzichristodoulou, and the Neapoli Choir, who performed Marios Tokas's "Mary, mother of our lord".

Tokas decided to rework the 16 Byzantine hymns written by Gerasimos Mikrayiannitis, during a visit to a monastery in Mount Athos.

Tokas upholds the Byzantine tradition, while at the same time making his own mark.

The concert was staged by the city of Athens, and broadcast by Antenna Radio.

B.BALL

In pro basketball, Olympiakos followed up its European championship title with a victory that sent it to the Greek playoff semi-finals.

Olympiakos beat Apollon in the third and deciding game of their series, 76- 66, and goes on to meet Peristeri in the semi-finals.

The fans had more than just the victory over Apollon to celebrate. Before the game, the team paraded the European championship trophy the team won last Thursday.

Aek began ITS semi-final series with a victory Tuesday.

Aek runs away from visiting Paok early, jumping out to a 37-14 lead, and cruises to a comfortable 70-54 triumph.

EASTER GAMES

And, finally, a look at some special Easter traditions. Red eggs are at the centre of the Greek holiday, not just for decor and eating, but for cracking.

People crack their boiled eggs together to see which one holds up.

In the village of KastanOUssa in northern Greece, the egg cracking is an organised event. The red egg competition, as it's aptly called, starts on Holy Saturday and ends Easter Monday.

The fifteen participants crack their arsenal of 30 red eggs each against each other. The eggs are numbered, so no wise guy replaces a broken egg with one uncracked.

The winner is the one who ends up with the most uncracked eggs in his carton.

Lazaros Kessides was this year's winner. This Michael Jordan of egg- cracking has a number of titles to his name, leaving many people wondering what he feeds his hens.

In the village of LefkAdia, over a thousand red eggs are cracked in a similar competition which produces more champions.

This year twenty people participated in the event, which turned out not one, but three winners.
