FLOODS

Two days after rivers burst their banks during heavy rains around the country, flood victims are mourning the loss of the seven people who died, and assessing the damage.

In some places, the threat of more flooding loomed large Tuesday.

CYPRUS

In Athens Tuesday, US envoy Carey Cavanaugh said he's optimistic that a solution will be found to the Cyprus problem.

Cavanaugh's trip to Cyprus, Turkey and Greece began amid worries over Turkish threats to attack Cyprus if it buys a defensive missile system from Russia.

PASOK

Pasok secretary Kostas Skandalides has launched a sharp attack on people politically close to the prime minister.

In an interview with the daily Ta Nea, Skandalides complains that people around Kostas Simitis are trying to brush aside party organisations and governmental institutions - and even the premier himself - and run the country on their own.

GAS

The prime minister called it a red letter date in the history of Greek energy supply.

The pipeline that will carry Russian gas to Greece is in place.

And Kostas Simitis inaugurated the gas works outside Athens Tuesday morning.

ISRAELI AMBASSADOR

A reception was held for the new Israeli ambassador to Greece Monday night.

Ran KouriEl was welcomed to his new job by Greece's Israeli Council.

KouriEl was born in 1949 and, after a long career with the Israeli foreign ministry, he is taking up his first ambassadorial post .

DEER

And, finally, test-tube deer. That's right, test- tube deer may soon be born in northern Greece!

Greek vets are trying to use artificial insemination techniques on deer for the first time, in an effort to save the endangered species.
