ROZAKIS

Deputy foreign minister Christos Rozakis resigned from his post Thursday for reasons of health problems.

Government spokesman Dimitris Reppas said Mr. Rozakis suffered from a serious health problem, a heart attack, on December 18th, which made him go to Onassio cardio-surgery center. Doctors recommended him to avoid any tension or tiring work.

Reppas added that Christos Rozakis won't be replaced until January 15th, as he will participate in the governmental meeting on the country's foreign policy for the new year, to be held on January 9th. He will then be working on Greece's missions abroad for the promotion of the country's positions over national issues.

Sources say premier Kostas Simitis and foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos discussed the Rozakis resignation matter Thursday morning. The issue is expected to be discussed also in Friday's meeting of the governmental committee. The meeting, presided by the prime minister, will focus on the government's priorities for the first months of the new year 1997.

DYSTOS

We heard earlier this week about the tragic naval accident that occurred in storm driven waters in the Aegean Saturday night.

Until Thursday, rescue workers have recovered 17 of the 20 people trapped inside the capsized cement carrier, before it slipped beneath the waves in shallow waters early Thursday.

The Dystos was headed from the central port city of Volos to Greece's leading port, Piraeus, with 15 thousand 3 hundred tons of cement, when it ran into foul weather last Thursday. It anchored off the island of Skiathos before resuming its voyage Saturday when the weather apparently improved. The ship capsized within a minute after two huge waves slammed into its side.

There was only one survivor from the accident, Christos Anagnostou, a 19- year-old officer trainee, who was washed overboard and saved by fishermen when they spotted his emergency flares.

Search will continue to find the rest of the missing people, three seamen.

BIRTH

After the tragic naval accident, a happy event came to overjoy Greece's seamen's family. The cry of a baby was heard on board a ferry boat.

A healthy little girl was born "Theofilos" ship, as it was sailing from the island of Mytilini to Piraeus port.

Twenty-three-year-old Victoria Georgopoulou gave birth to her child Wednesday night, with the help of the ship's captain, and three doctors trainees at the very well equipped medical unit of the boat.

It may sound strange, but the birth of a child on board wasn't something new for Captain Vassilis Ikonomides. The skipper has seen or helped three similar cases on board; an experience that would envy many obstetricians!

ANTENNA AID/XANTHI

In the spirit of Christmas days, Antenna fulfilled its social role once again, by sending aid to flood victims in the Xanthi area in northern Greece. Antenna radio station called everybody to collect foodstuff, clothes and primary necessities items and distributed them to families of Xanthi.

The convoy of love undertaken by Antenna and Athens set off recently. Several trucks will get to Xanthi, in northern Greece, to provide residents with food, clothes and primary necessities items, as most of their homes and personal belongings were destroyed by the floodwaters this fall.

Dozens of volunteers loaded food, clothes, medicine, even household appliances onto the trucks which will carry people's aid to northern Greece.

Antenna's public relations director Lola Daifa explained, "Antenna radio undertook this initiative sensibilised by the plight of the area's flood victims".

A well-known super market offered 7 tons of foodstuff, while Athens medical center delivered medicine. A well-known insurance company, Athens archdiocese, Athens municipality and Local Administration officials supported the mission of love.

Vice-mayor Yiannis PieroutsAkos said, "We thank Antenna and all those who helped in relieving Xanthi's flood victims".

Greece's Mortgage Bank also announced favourable loan terms for people afflicted by the recent floods.

SANTA

Christmas' most characteristic figure, Santa Claus usually visits our homes coming down our chimneys. Well, that's what legend has it.

But, in an Athenian suburb, Santa decided to show off his sports abilities, climbing on the walls of a five-floor building.

Tied up with climbing rope, Santa Claus visited everyone of the building's apartments to give children the new year's presents. He explained, "I believe that we must live the legends and have fun".

And it seems he was quite right. This little boy said, "I believe in Santa Claus because he comes every year and brings us presents".

Indeed, the other children seemed to enjoy the risky Santa's presence as well.

MONASTERY

Manuscripts and documents dating from the 10th century until today were collected in a book, which was recently presented. Monks from the Vatopedion monastery at the Agion Oros worked with historians, university professors and archeologists to make a priceless book with written documents and pictures from the monastery's history and property.

The Vatopedion monastery is considered as the cradle of Greek culture and orthodoxy. The book's edition was sponsored by Ionian bank.

Defense minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos also attended the launching event.

POLISH BOOKS

A Polish company has donated a collection of books by well-known Polish writers to the University of Athens Foreign Civilisations Department.

The collection includes philosophy, books of literature, and children's books. It will be added to the department library.

Polish embassy officials hope a seed is being planted for the future. They hope the addition to the library will one day be useful to students when a Polish Studies department is set up at the university.

IOANNIDES

Christmas spirit stays alive in our hearts, and in this spirit AEK's basketball players and coach Yiannis Ioannides visited Athens minors prison Thursday morning.

In a warm atmosphere, the team's players and their coach distributed presents and basket-balls. "With the athletism, we're trying to show these kids that there is another way to avoid going wrong", coach Ioannides told reporters.

As for new year's wishes, the coach of the black- and-yellows had something different to say. "I wish that people has the means to survive. Health is good, but needs something more, the capability to afford living".

ALIKI THEATRE

The memory of Aliki Vouyouklaki, the legend of Greek cinema and theatre, was revived recently at the theater that bears her name, where she had been acting until the last months of her life.

For the first time, the children of Dimitris Typaldos choir, who worked with Aliki in her last play, "The sound of Music", sang for their beloved teacher, without her. Aliki's fans had the chance to enjoy a three-section tribute to the late actress.

One of the children's choir explains, "The first section includes Aliki's cinema songs, the second excerpts from her theatrical performances and the third, her most favourite songs".

Another little girl adds, "Now, on stage, our teacher, Aliki WILL be with us".

"Aliki" theatre will be hosting new performances by the new year 1997.
