  • A severe warning to all party dissenders from New Democracy's emergency political council
  • And, a "hot" story on a revolutionary fire extinguishing liquid.

TURKISH CHOPPER

A Turkish navy helicopter crashed into the Aegean sea early Tuesday. The Augusta Bell 212 chopper took off from a Turkish destroyer, participating in a NATO exercise. Its four crew members were presumed dead.

The bodies of three crew members have already been found. The rescue operation is being coordinated by the Greek officer in command of the NATO forces fleet, of which the Turkish destroyer was participating.

The cause of the accident's are unknown yet, however it is estimated that the helicopter crashed about ten miles after it had taken off the Turkish naval warship, due to mecanical failure.

The accident occurred about thirty miles off the southeastern coast of the Greek island of Rhodes. The NATO exercise included the participation of naval warships from Greece, Turkey, Spain, Italy and the United States.

SHIP

Back to another naval accident which occurred last week, the divers search team located a part of the Greek warship Kostakos, which sank after a ferry boat leaving the island of Samos rammed into it, sending it to rest 160 metres beneathe the sea.

Late Monday the search team's robotic-submarine camera located the telecommunications tower of the warship nearly 30 meters far from the wreckage. The greek flag was still tight on the tower's mast. The refloating operation lasted five hours.

The search will continue to find the four missing crew members as well as other parts of the warship "Kostakos", including one of the Penguin missiles it carried, which was detached after the naval accident occurred. The divers team estimated that the missile is located about 30 meters far from the wreckage.

ECONOMY

The governmental committee met Tuesday morning for over five hours to discuss the new year's budget as well as the golden mean needed between the tight financial policy, requested by the EU convergence, and the social image the Pasok government has promised for the Greek people.

The committee approved the taxation of landed property and of state bonds, while the next cabinet WILL announce its decisions over the tax breaks, which should be abolished according to tax officials, and the government's 1997 public sector pay proposals.

The cabinet will meet next Tuesday, after the meetings of Pasok's central committee and parliamentary group over the government's economy measures.

Workers trade unions have already expressed their disagreement over the government's financial proposals. The civil servant's trade union announced that its members will go on strike on November 28th, one day before the government's new year budget is officially released to the public.

Pasok is proposing a minimum civil service wage of 700 dollars a month, to be boosted by bonuses. The union wants a higher minimum entry-level salary.

N.D.

New Democracy's political council, which held an emergency meeting Tuesday - called by party leader Miltiades Evert-, issued a unanimously voted decision, by which all inner-party dissidents are severely warned to watch out their steps.

The party's top members said in this decision that the behaviour of some party MPs, who put in doubt the latest decision of the political council as well as the historical course of the party, is unacceptable and can't be tolerable in the future.

On Monday, party leader Miltiades Evert announced that he would call the emergency meeting of the party's political council, after one of his main opponents, Dora Bakoyianni used some harsh words against him last weekend. In an interview she gave the daily TA NEA, Bakoyianni called Evert to withdraw from the party's leadership on his own initiative, before the party congress, which is expected to come in mid-1997. She also said that party MP Giorgos Souflias, will be supported in his candidacy for the party leadership in the congress. Souflias, Bakoyianni and Stefanos Manos are in the frontline of those opposed to the Evert leadership.

Furthermore, last Friday, MP Petros Tatoulis was reprimanded for telling Antenna that the party's problems stem from the fact that Evert was re- elected leader after his September resignation. On Monday, Tatoulis gave explanations for his statements, to the party's parliamentary group secretary, and said he was not afraid to be expelled from his party.

The party's political council discussed the statements of Tatoulis and Bakoyianni in its emergency meeting Tuesday, but didn't issue any official statement.

Sources say party leader Miltiades Evert stressed that all decisions taken by party bodies should be respected in order to avoid the humiliation of the party itself.

Party MP Giorgos Souflias replied that the pre- congress procedure that has started, can't be compromised by any disciplinary party councils nor by extreme positions.

MP Yiannis Kefaloyiannis used harsh words against the party dissidentss. He said that whoever disagrees with the party's decisions should undertake his responsibilities and decide whether he wants to stay in the party or not.

Honorary president Constantinos Mitsotakis didn't participate in Tuesday's political council meeting. "This meeting wouldn't contribute to the effort for making the way to an honest and representative congress easier", he said Monday.

NATIONAL GALLERY

The National Gallery is hosting an impressive painting exhibition these days, entitled "The woman's world". It includes some of the gallery's permanent exhibits made by well-known Greek painters.

As art historian Manos Stefanides explains, this exhibit is giving art lovers the chance to admire excellent women's portraits, painted by some of the greatest artists of the thirties and of the so- called "painting school of the Ioanian islands".

With a large range of artistic tendancies, always focused on women, The National Gallery accomplishes its real mission with this exhibit : to present the highly interesting adventures of the modern greek painting.

FIRE

A revolutionary liquid made by Greek scientists could work miracles in extinguishing fire in wooden structures, houses, and even forests!
