ECONOMYThe prime minister discussed the 1997 budget plans with his economy minister Thursday. Observers say that indicates that the government is speeding up the process of finalising the budget.Interior minister Alekos Papadopoulos also discussed the budget Thursday, in a meeting with the head of the civil servants union. The government and the union don't see eye to eye on Pasok's proposed payroll changes for next year. Among other things, the union wants a higher minimum wage for civil service employees, and a higher maximum wage. CYPRUSHellenism continues its struggle for justice in Cyprus. The Cypriot government is trying to get the Turkish murderers of Greek-Cypriots Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomou tried by the international court.Both men were murdered in August, as they protested the Turkish occupation of the island. Isaac was beaten to death by a Turkish mob in the neutral zone. Solomou was gunned down by occupation forces as he tried to lower a Turkish flag. Since then, another Greek-Cypriot was shot to death by Turkish troops. Eyewitnesses say soldiers forced retiree Petros Kakkoulis to walk into the occupied territory before the shot him to death on October 13th. Opening the new buildings, Greek president Kostis Stefanopoulos said he was particularly moved to the efforts being made on behalf of children with special needs. The new wing of the society building includes computers with special programmes designed to be easy for disabled kids to use. Christina Gaki, a graduate of the society's school, said she owes her success in life to the society: "The people from the society developed my abilities, and made me a professional with their love, care and confidence in me". The new wing was built with money donated by Konstantinos Karpithas in memory of his sister Maria. BASKETBALLGreece's national basketball team guaranteed itself in next summer's European championship tournament in Spain. Greece does it winning a nail-biter in Israel. The Israelis send it into overtime with a desperation three-pointer with 7 seconds to play.
