TITLES

  • Turkish soldiers murder another Greek Cypriot.
  • The government gets a parliamentary vote of confidence.
  • Greek businessmen go to the US.

KAKOULIS

There was more heartbreak and anger for Greek- Cypriots this week. Hellenism was stunned, as Turkish soldiers shot a defenceless 58-year-old retiree to death early Sunday morning.

BURNS

The United Nations and the United States condemned the murder of Petros Kakoulis.

But, the US also appeared to keep an equal distance from both the Greek-Cypritos and the Turks, leaving Athens miffed.

GOVERNMENT

The week got off to a good start for Kostas Simitis.

Last weekend, the newly-elected prime minister won the traditional vote of confidence in his new government. All 161 Pasok votes present gave him the nod; 104 MPs voted "no".

The vote followed days of debate, in which the prime minister outlined his plans for the next four years.

PASOK

On Friday, Kostas Simitis told Pasok's central committee that maintaining a high standard of ethics is crucial for anyone working in the government. The Greek people are willing to make sacrifices now, only because Pasok has promised to work for the nation.

Simitis said the main task before his cabinet is maintaining the people's confidence in the integrity of the government.

GREEK BUSINESS

And, finally tonight: the US embassy announced this week it is going to help introduce Greek merchants to high-tech products available in the US.

The embassy's commerce section is going to send groups of Greek wholesalers and retailers to international exhibits of products in the US.

Embassy press attache BJ Dowling says his department is going to work harder to help make high- quality, high-tech American products better known in Greece".

Embassy staff will accompany the business groups on their trips to the states, helping them make business contacts across the Atlantic.

The groups will visit commercial exhibits concerned mainly with information technology, electricity production, and medical instruments.
