CYPRUS

In the second day of his visit to Cyprus, Prime minister Kostas Simitis discussed with Cypriot president Glafcos Clerides the next movements of both countries, in vue of international initiatives which are expected to be taken until the end of the year, especially from the US after November's presidential elections; these initiatives which would help in giving a final solution to the Cyprus issue.

Both leaders stressed that the US, the European Union as well as the United Nations, should coordinate their efforts to face the Turkish intransigence over the issue.

The statements of the Greek premier on this point were clear. In the special ceremony, during which he was announced as honorary resident of the city of Nicosia, Kostas Simitis said, "We support the UN decisions as well as the efforts made by the organisation's secretary. But we also welcome any initiative for the solution of the Cyprus issue, becuase we intend to hear any proposal with open mind for the issue's solution, as long as the illegal occupation and division of the island are not directly or indirectly legalised".

In the common communique released by the Greek premier and the Cypriot president, they stressed that the Cyprus issue is coming through an especially critical phase, demanding delicate and careful handlings. They also referred to the necessary implementation of the joint defence doctrine between the two countries.

Yiannakis Kassoulides, Cyprus government spokesman, said, "Greek and Cyprus officials recognised the major significance of both countries defence cooperation, and made clear that any attempt by Turkey to advance its occupation forces in Cyprus will be considered an act of war".

Prime minister Kostas Simitis was also awarded with the title of honorary professor at the University of Nicosia. In his speech, during the special ceremony, the greek premier presented the main scheme of his government's foreign policy. More specifically, regarding the greek-turkish relations Simitis repeated that his government insists on a step-by-step approach between the two countries. And, the first step towards this strategy should be made by Turkey by going to the International Court of the Hague over the issue of the Imia rocks.

N.D.

Optimism was the key-word for both camps in New Democracy. After Tuesday's elections for the 76 electors from the party's county organisations, supporters of both contenders for leadership, Miltiades Evert and Giorgos Souflias, expressed their satisfaction for the results.

Supporters of Evert, former leader of the party, estimated that there were 53 electors close to Evert elected, and only 23 electors close to Souflias.

Of course, this was not the case for the estimations in the opposite camp. Souflias's supporters said they got 42 people close to the former minister, adding that only 34 electors close to Evert were elected.

Both contenders had successive meetings with party members Wednesday. Giorgos Souflias met with Dora Bakoyianni and Stephanos Manos, former contenders for the party's leadership, for a general assessment of the inner-party elections.

Friday morning, New Democracy one hundred and ninety-three electors, among them the 76 members of the county organisations elected on Tuesday, 108 MPs and 9 euro-deputies, will vote for the party's new president.

ECONOMY MEASURES

The government is expected to propose increases on direct and indirect taxes, to fill in the so-called "black hole" of the country's budget.

Since the beginning of last summer, the finance ministry has decided to bring circulation taxes up by even 33 per cent, in some cases. For instance, people with cars whose engines are no bigger than 1350 cubic centimetres will pay 25 per cent more taxes a year to keep the wagon on the road.

Prices of alcoholic drinks and cigarettes will follow the up-wards trend as well. Drinks are expected to be priced by 10 or 15 per cent higher than last year.

OTE

The leading council of the Greek Industrialists Union visited the Greek phone company's headquarters (OTE) Wednesday morning.

The industrialists were informed by the management of OTE on the company's programme of Greek products supplied. The company is interested in getting its necessary technical equipment from Greek industries.

Petros Lambrou, managing director of OTE, which is considered the most profitable Greek enterprise, explained, "Greek industry is able to provide us with high quality but low price products".

And, Iasson Stratos, president of the Greek Industrialists, added, "We've come to the point where state organisations, such as the phone company, or the electricity company, realize that in addition to the national interest, our cooperation with them is also in the interest of the company itself".

OTE officials will meet with the company's workers union next week, on the sidelines of their social partners approach policy.

ASPIRINE

Take an aspirine and you may reduce the risk of suffering from a sudden stroke! That's what scientists tell us, after a resent research that was carried out all over Europe. The research results were presented during the 11nth Psychiatry congress in Thessaloniki.

According to the research, which was focused on the cases of six thousand patients in Europe, vascular strokes are the major cause of physical disabilities number one on a worldwide level, and the third leading cause of death , after cancer and heart diseases.

Kornilios Routsonis, Neurology professor, explains that aspirine has been proven to be very efficient in preventing cerebral thrombosis.

Routsonis also added that, "For the past ten years, aspirine has been considered as the miracle-medicine".

MELISSANIDES

Last summer we admired the youngest Greek Olympic winner of the year, 19-year-old Yiannis Melissanides who won frist place on the gymnastics floor exercises.

Melissanides was awarded by the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki with a honorary plaque on Wednesday morning. Family members of Yiannis Melissanides, who is also a medical student, attended the awarding ceremony.

The young man brought a gold medal after his participation in his FIRST Olympics this year.
