TITLES

  • Kostas Simitis and Pasok win Greece's general election.
  • New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert resigns, sparking off a leadership contest.
  • And, Greek soccer hopes are dashed in Europe.

ELECTIONS

Kostas Simitis and Pasok celebrated a national election victory this week. Pasok pulled in 41.5 per cent of the votes in last Sunday's balloting, picking up 162 deputies in the 300-seat parliament, a comfortable majority.

Pasok edged out second-place New Democracy, which captured just over 38 per cent of the ballots.

CARD

Pasok may hold the majority of seats in the new parliament, but four other parties also won seats. Kostas Simitis applauded that, calling the new parliament a "pluralist" forum for broad social dialogue.

Checking out the results of last Sunday's balloting, as you can see, Pasok and New Democracy won 270 of the 300 seats.

Dimitris Tsovolas's newly-formed Democratic Movement, or Diki, did well in its first electoral showing. The left-wing Pasok breakaway party picked up 9 seats with around 4 and a half per cent of the total votes.

The communist party, or KKE, occupies 11 seats in the new parliament. And the Left Coalition, or Synaspismos, is back in parliament after being shut out in the 1993 election. The Coalition picked up 10 seats.

There was bad news for Political Spring, led by New Democracy defector Antonis Samaras. Spring won seats in the 1993 election. But this time Samaras's party fell just shy of the 3 per cent minimum needed to win a parliamentary seat.

SWORN

Kostas Simitis and his new cabinet were sworn in Wednesday. The prime minister said his government's aim is to get working fast to take the country forward.

ND

Following his election defeat, New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert resigned, saying he took full responsibility for the loss.

MPs Stephanos Manos and Dora Bakoyianni, daughter of former prime minister Constantinos Mitsotakis, immediately announced their candidacies for his job. Later in the week, Giorgos Souflias also entered the race.

Though he'd resigned, Evert did not say he would not try to be elected party leader again. and there were reports that Mitsotakis would enter the race if Evert did.

But both Manos and Souflias said the Evert- Mitsotakis rift was bad for the party, and were ready to join forces in the leadership race.

CYPRUS

The Greek prime minister warned this week that any attempt by Turkey to advance its occupation forces in Cyprus will be considered an act of war.

Kostas Simitis added in his interview with a Cypriot magazine that Cyprus is a priority issue for Greece.

SOCCER

There was bad news for Greek fans on the soccer pitch this week: the European season came to a swift end for both Panathinaikos and Olympiakos. Both were booted out of the Uefa cup in the tournament's first round.

Up against Warsaw's Legia in Poland, Pao goes down to a 2-nil defeat. The home team gets its first goal in the 60th minute.

As time winds down, Pao looks safe though. Its earlier 4-2 victory in Athens will give it the aggregate advantage if the scoring stops there.

But the Poles score again just before the final whistle blows. And Legia goes on to the next round because of its two goals on the road in Athens.

It's the same story for Olympiakos, playing the return match against Budapest's Ferentsvaros.

Olympiakos lost 3-1 in Budapest, and can't turn that around at home. The Hungarians scrape through to the next round with a 2-2 draw and the better aggregate.

MOON

In European championship basketball, Olympiakos levelled its record at one and one, knocking off visiting Bologna 96-80. Panathinaikos is also one and one, after dropping a 77-58 road decision to Barcelona. And Panionios, the other Greek team in the Euroleague also has a win and a loss, after falling to Turkey's Ulker, 87-69.

People who would rather watch the sky than watch players sky all came up winners this week. A lunar eclipse graced the Greek sky Thursday night.

During the eclipse, the moon took on a reddish colour, caused by light hitting the lunar surface after it reflected off the earth.

Greece has had two lunar eclipse's this year. But it's feast or famine - Thursday night's was the last one of this century. The next one will be in the year 2 thousand.

That doesn't mean there won't be anymore celestial happenings before then: on October 12th, people in Greece will be treated to a solar eclipse.
