SIMITIS"Our party's aim is to reinforce the state health system", Simitis said in his press conference Thursday. The State Social Security health centers will be improved, and the citizens will have the chance to be treated by special family doctors.Premier Simitis stressed that all of the Greeks should be able to get medical treatment on equal terms. He talked about changes in the infrastructure and the management of the state hospitals as well as about hirings of new medical staff, to cover the hospitals' needs. "Every citizen should have an easy and equal access to high quality health services", Simitis told reporters. He added, "Since 1993, for the first time in Greece there has been implemented an expanded health programme, with nine new hospitals in seven districts and seven hospitals under construction". Prime minister Kostas Simitis also referred to a new allocation, which was recently given to low pensioners. The so-called "Social Solidarity Allocation for Pensioners" is being given to pensioners making up to 400 dollars a month. Kostas Simitis presented specific slides and diagrams willing to show that under New Democracy's rule, the figures of the health development were lower than the ones during Pasok's term. EVERT"George Papandreou, father of Andreas Papandreou, had once said ''in some cases figures thrive, but people live in misery''. These words could match exactly the press conference that Kostas Simitis gave today", New Democracy spokesman Prokopis Pavlopoulos said, commenting on the prime minister's positions.Pavlopoulos talked about "fake promises" given to the greek people by Kostas Simitis. New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert toured in northern Greece and the city of Serres Wednesday, while he met with representatives of dairy farmers Thursday morning. Evert told them that his party, if it comes to power, will do its best to resolve their economy problems. "New Democracy is not giving fake promises", he said. "The measures we announced for the low pensioners and farmers, as well as for the small businesses, are feasible within thirty days after our government will be formed", he added. SMALL PARTIESThe smaller parties continued their pre- election campaign, mostly trying to get closer to the undecided voters.Political Spring leader Antonis Samaras toured in Athens suburbs Thursday morning, predicting that his party will play a determinative role after the elections. He said, "The greek people are determined to make our party a power of control over the top two parties, in order to protect Greece's national interests". Communist party secretary Aleka Papariga held a speech at her party's rally in Thessaloniki Thursday night, while Left Coalition leader Nikos Konstantopoulos went to one of Greece's major ports, Piraeus. Earlier in the day, Konstantopoulos visited the island of Crete and accused the leaders of the top two parties, Kostas Simitis and Miltiades Evert for being irresponsible over the country's national issues. Democratic Movement leader Dimitris Tsovolas was in the city of Chania, Crete Thursday. He said that whichever one of the top two parties becomes government after the elections, it will follow the same foreign policy of dependance and subjection to foreign powers. TURKEYWith a large majority the European Parliament strongly denounced the murders of the two Greek-Cypriot unarmed men, Tassos Isaak and Solomos Solomou, over a month ago in Cyprus's neutral zone by, quote, "Turkish soldiers and para-military groups". The European Parliament called Turkey "to accept and implement the UN resolutions".In its resolution, which was approved by 319 votes for, 23 against and 20 abstentions, the European Parliament also accused the deteriorating behaviour of Ankara in matters ofthe respect of human rights , in Cyprus as well as the Kurds issue. The European MPs also have implemented the procedure of freezing the EU credits to Turkey. PAPADELISAccording to the Thursday's medical report, Deputy Health minister Franglinos Papadelis finally won his battle for life.Papadelis was hit by a sudden and heavy stroke on Monday, during his pre-election campaign in the Aegean island of Limnos, and was immediately rushed to the General State Hospital in Athens. Doctors stopped giving him medication, because Papadelis can normally breath, without being mecanically supported. They also estimated that the stroke may have not caused damages to his brain. LADY DWe heard yesterday that Princess Diana came to Greece for a short vacation. Diana attended the funeral of a young man, whom she met six months ago during one of her visits to a London hospital.28-year-old Yiannis Kalyviotis suffered from cystic fibrosis in his pancreas, since he was a child. His disease was deteriorated nine years ago, when his father died. His love for life deeply moved the princess. Kalyviotis finished his Law studies in Athens, under a breathing support machine. Last weekend Yiannis was waiting for a double heart and lungs transplant, however, his heart unfortunately stopped beating on Saturday. Princess Diana, who became a close friend of his in London, accompanied his family to his last residence at the town of Limni, on the island of Evia. Diana plans to be in Washington next Tuesday at a dinner for the Nina Hyde Cancer Research Appeal. ARDANOne of the most famous French movies star, Fanny Ardan, came to Greece this week."I'm not feeling as a professional, but more as a passionate woman", Ardan told reporters in a press conference. "I choose my roles judging upon my deep desires, and not my carreer", she added. Fanny Ardan expressed her particular love for cinema, in comparison with the stage, as well as her gratitude towards her companion, well-known director, Francois Truffaud. Ardan will play the famous Greek singer Maria Kallas on stage, under the direction of Roman Polansky. Maria Kallas is an example of life, for Ardan. As for Greece, the famous French actress said, "It represents a legend. Greeks send out something alive, kind of spark, a combination of warmth and melancoly". BALLETAbility of self-expression through art is surely something that the dancers of the Alvin Aley's Dance group are not missing. And this was proven on stage, at the Irodion ancient theatre in Athens on Tuesday night.Alvin Aley, the choreographer who managed to mingle modern dance with the black cultural and religious tradition, fascinated the Athenian audience with his dancers, especially with the spirit of worldwide brotherhood that their performance sent out. Gold olympic winner in gymnastics Yiannis Melissanides was also there to admire them.
