DEBATEFor the first time in Greece, the leaders of the top two parties, Pasok and New Democracy, took part in a televised debate, which was broadcasted live by Antenna Satellite television.Prime minister Kostas Simitis and the main opposition party's leader Miltiades Evert answered twelve questions posed by three journalists, referring to Greece's foreign and internal issues, to the course of the country's economy as well as to the ruling perspectives of each one of the two parties. Another journalist coordinated the debate, which was presented following the American TV debate standards that Antenna was the first Greek station to present. The coordinator of the debate as well as the other three journalists were selected unanimously by reps of the parties. This debate has been considered as a highly important political event a week before the elections, as the recent polls which were published, have shown that the top two parties are neck and neck. The pre-election period will end next week, by the parties last rallies in Athens and Thessaloniki. POLLSTwo weeks before Greeks go to the polls to elect a new government, the pre-election polls show the top two parties are neck andneck. Two surveys - one conducted for a newspaper, the other for a TV station - both come up with the same result: Pasok and New Democracy are in a dead heat going into the final stretch. POLL ALKOAnd we close our review on the polls which were published this week, by taking a look at the latest survey carried out all over Greece by ALKO company, and which was presented Thursday night by Antenna television. The top two parties are neck and neck, with New Democracy being first, with 31.2 per cent, and Pasok following with 30.5 per cent. The percentage of the undecided voters is quite high, 13.5 per cent, something that proves the first polls estimations that the political scene after September 22nd will most probably be determined by the undecided ones! As for the rest of the parties, the Democratic Movement of Dimitris Tsovolas appeared as the third party, with 5.3 per cent, Political Spring got 4.3, Left Coalition 4.1 and the Communist party 4 per cent. 1.9 per cent of the questioned voters said they would vote for another party, while 4.4 would go for the blank ballots. A 0.8 per cent refused to answer the poll. ALKO's manager Kostas Panagopoulos also showed the poll's results concerning the parties where the undecided voters come from, in comparison to what they had voted in the previous elections, three years ago. 42 per cent of the undecided voters come from Pasok, while 21 per cent from New Democracy, 6 per cent from Political Spring and 3 per cent from the Left Coalition. There are 7 per cent of new voters and 8 per cent said they wouldn't vote. SIMITISThe prime minister says that Greece is winning the diplomatic war against Turkish expansionism for the first time since 1974.Outlining his foreign policy plans for the country for another Pasok term of office, Kostas Simitis says international public opinion has shifted Greece's way when it comes to Greek-Turkish relations. EVERT REPLYDuring that press conference, Mr Simitis also attacked Miltiades Evert's 7-point foreign policy plan, which the New Democracy leader announced last week.Evert responded to the prime minister with a press conference of his own later in the day. CYPR/TURK.SOLD.The British authorities in Cyprus have cut short Turkish attempts to make propaganda use of the shooting of two Turkish soldiers on the divided island.Turkey has accused the Greek-Cypriots of being behind the shootings, which left one of the soldiers dead. But the British authorities say the shots were fired from Turkish-occupied territory. Greek leaders say the shootings were an act of Turkish provocation. CYPRUS/AKINBut, Turkish occupation forces seemed willing to maintain the tense atmosphere in Cyprus, only three days after the shooting death of a Turkish soldier from inside occupied territory. On Tuesday, Turkish-Cypriot soldiers attempted to occupy a sentry post in the neutral zone of Nicosia, which it had abandoned 1989. However, the Turks were stopped by UN peacekeepers. However...there have been two wills submitted, one by his widow Dimitra Papandreou, and the other by his daughter Sofia Papandreou Katsaneva. The Court granted probate to both of them, because their content is not controversial. However, the first one includes quite strong words against Andreas Papandreou's son-in-law, Thodoros Katsanevas, and tender words about his wife, Dimitra.
