TITLES

  • A close associate of Denktash, one of the murderers of Solomos Solomou.
  • Who is the most appropriate premier, according to the latest polls.
  • Antenna's broadcast of the Greek basketball's anniversary.

CYPRUS

His name is Kenan Akin. The Public Prosecutor's Office, which has largely worked on the video-taped killing of Solomou, broadcast around the world, found out that Kenan Akin is the man who shot Solomou from the balcony of the Turkish- Cypriot sentry post in Derynia. It was not hard to find pictures or video-tapes with Kenan Akin, as he's a public figure in the occupied part of Cyprus. As a matter of fact, his picture was front-page published on the Turkish- Cypriot daily "Kibris" Monday, in a report referring to Sunday's shooting of two Turkish soldiers on teh divided island. According to the research carried out by Nicosia's Public Prosecutor's Office, there were five men in total who shot Solomos Solomou. Sources say that their names, in addition to Kenan Akin, will be soon published. The information that Akin is one of the five murderers was broadcast by the Reuters press agency and given by Cypriot officials, who preferred not to reveal their names. Kenan Akin is a former officer of the Turkish army as well as Agriculture minister of the occupied part of Cyprus. He's also a close associate of the Turkish-Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash. Akin denied Tuesday in Reuters the accusation of being one of the murderers of Solomou, adding that it was set up by the Greek-Cypriot press. He claimed not even being present at the incident of August 14th. Meanwhile, research is continued to identify the murderers of the other unarmed Greek-Cypriot protestor in the neutral zone, Tassos Isaak, who was beaten to death by Turkish soldiers. Monday we heard that two soldiers were shot at a Turkish sentry post along Cyprus's neutral zone, near the village of Acheritou, across from territory under British command. Turkey has accused the Greek-Cypriots of being behind the shootings, which left one of the soldiers dead, but the British authorities say the shots were fired from Turkish-occupied territory. Tuesday, sources said that the soldier who was shot to death, was of Kurdish origin, and that his family had been transferred to the occupied part of Cyprus in 1974. This fact, as well as the fact that any access to the Turkish sentry post in Acheritou is possible only from the occupied territory, make more evident the point of view that this was an act of Turkish provocation.

POLL

Two weeks before Greeks go to the polls to elect a new government the polls-mania keeps on rolling. Every day a newspaper or a TV station publish surveys showing how the candidates stack up.

A PRC poll conducted for the daily "TA NEA" shows which leader the Greek voters consider as the most appropriate for the post of the prime minister.

As you can see, 50.7% of the voters say Kostas Simitis is the most favored figure, while 27.2% go for New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert. And, there is still a 22.1% who considers none of the above suitable for the post of the premier. In the same poll, PRC questioned voters which they consider as the most important problems of the country that must be immediately resolved by the new government? The top four issues were; Greek-turkish relations, Greece's defense policy, education and health system which trouble supporters of both New Democracy and Pasok.

LALIOTIS/SIMITIS IN ARTA

Environment minister Kostas Laliotis strongly attacked New Democracy and its leader Miltiades Evert over his pre-election announcements regarding the economy measures his party promised to implement after the elections. Kostas Laliotis, who will be Pasok's spokesman until the elections, talked to reporters Tuesday, as he will do every day until September 22nd, the elections day. Laliotis said that the fake transfigurations of New Democracy and its leader do not persuade nor mislead the greek people. Referring to the latest polls, which showed that the top two parties are neck and neck, the environment minister said the surveys' results are proved to be finally positive for Pasok. When asked whether Pasok is fighting against two "ennemies", New Democracy and the Democratic Movement, the party founded by the former Pasok MP Dimitris Tsovolas, Kostas Laliotis said that his party has been fighting only against the conservative party, since its foundation. "You must all support the progressive party", prime minister Kostas Simitis said in his pre-election speech in Arta on Monday, making an appeal for unity and determination among Pasok voters. "There is only one truth in these elections", he added. "The winner will be either the right wing, the progressive party,or the central-left wing party". Simitis toured in central and northern Greece, On Tuesday he will visit the Peloponese.

EVERT

"Development" is the key-word to fight against the major problem of unemployment, New Democracy leader Miltiades Evert said, in a press conference he gave on Monday afternoon. Referring to the necessary remedies for the unemployment, Evert stressed that the GNP should be increased by 4%, in addition to a package of reinforcement measures for the country's farmers and small businessmen. A week ago, we heard that the New Democracy leader had announced seven specific measures he will adopt right after his election, designed to correct some economic wrongs. On Tuesday, Miltiades Evert met with delegations of families with over three children, whom he reassured that his government, if his party wins the elections, will bring back all of the financial and social advantages they had and which were abolished by Pasok.

"This is a matter of national importance, as it is directly related to the country's demographic problem", Evert said, after his meeting with the reps of the families with several children. New Democracy leader also met with the Greek Industrialists Association. He said industries should be reinforced in the country and stressed that there must be given further financial motives to the Stocks Exchange.

POLITICAL PARTIES

Focusing now on the rest of the political parties, Political Spring leader Antonis Samaras continues his tour all over Greece, attacking Pasok and New Democracy for including Greek muslim voters in their tickets. Communist Party secretary Aleka Papariga is in Thessaloniki, where she's continuing her visits to working places. And, Dimitris Tsovolas, president of the Democratic Movement, goes to central Greece. Referring to the latest polls, he said that he's surveying the greek voters every day and that all those who have underestimated the greek people, will get a tough reply after the elections.

VILLAGERS

Last week we heard that residents of several villages in northern and central Greece have decided not to vote in the elections, or have any buisness with politicians. They're fed up with promises to solve problems such as unpaved roads, and a lack of schools- that go unfulfilled. The groundswell of discontent continues. In five villages in Arkathia, southern Greece, residents are also saying "no" to the politicians. The oldest resident of the village of PeletA, at the age of 100 years, still remembers himself carrying water in buckets from water-tanks. And this situation has not changed since the villages were formed! Residents say the state has never taken care of building a network of water-sypply pipelines in their villages. Yet, another message sent from over two thousand five hundred voters in Arkathia that they want fewer promises, and more action.

SCHOOLS

With the announcement of several changes in the schools programmes Education minister George Papandreou welcomed the one million seven hundred thousand students who will go back to school tomorrow, in the first day of the school year. One supplementary hour per week and new books in two lessons will delay the school students, along with two foreign languages for the high-school students. Education minister announced that in fifteen Athenian high-schools, a new teaching system will be implemented, with the establishment of specific teaching halls for each lesson. Students will have to change classes to follow the different courses. According to the Education ministry's data, about one hundred thirty thousand children will go to the first class at the primary schools tomorrow.

We all wish them, Good Luck!

BASKETBALL CELEBRATION

Antenna television live broadcasted the Greek basketball anniversary, where the best players and teams of the previous season were honoured. The MVP award was given to Giorgos Sigalas, and the first scorer was Mitchell Wiggins. Byron Dickins, Harold Davis, Alexis Papadatos, Angelos Koronios, Panagiotis Fassoulas and Giorgos KarAgoutis were some of the best players who offered unforgettable moments to basketball lovers on Greek and foreign courts last season. The teams of Panathinaikos and Olympiakos were awarded for winning respectively the European and Greek Championships. All of the sports officials and teams' presidents who attended the awarding ceremony expressed their best wishes for the new year. Antenna's president Minos Kyriakou reassured that Antenna will stand by Greek basketball in the near future, as it has done in the past. He said, "I believe we will prove what Antenna means and how it can promote Greek basketball for the next two years, because Greece deserves it".
