  • And, the European Union's show of solidarity with Greece.

TWA

The world was stung by sorrow this week. TWA flight 800 exploded in mid-air Thursday, killing everyone on board, including some Greek-Americans.

Investigators say it could be a long time before they know what caused the tragedy. US president Bill Clinton has repeatedly asked that people not reach premature conclusions about what happened.

Nonetheless, a number of reports in the American press have suggested that lax security at Athens airport may have given terrorists a chance to plant a bomb on the ill-fated plane.

ALIKI

One of Greece's most popular stage and screen stars, Aliki Vouyouklaki, is in critical condition in an Athens hospital.

The star has been in the hospital for two months, undergoing treatment for an unspecified liver-related illness.

Doctors initially said they were optimistic she would recover from her illness. But, Thursday they announced that her condition had seriously worsened.

E.U.

On Monday, Greece lifted its veto over a 500 million dollar aid package destined for Turkey. In return, the EU issued a statement saying that Turkey should stop provoking Greece in the Aegean, and settle differences through the international court.

Thursday, Turkish foreign minister Tansu Ciller said in Ireland that Turkey is not bound by that statement.

And she repeated the old Turkish call for dialogue between Greece and Turkey. On the basis of those talks, she said, the two sides could decide which Aegean issues could be referred to the international court.

Greece has rejected that call, saying it will not negotiate away its territorial rights.

ALBRIGHT

US ambassador to the UN Madeleine Albright met with Greek premier Kostas Simitis and foreign minister Theodoros Pangalos in Athens this week. They discussed Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.

After the meetings, Albright said the US is in favour of sending Greek-turkish disputes in the Aegean to the International court in the Hague.

The American ambassador to the UN also visited Cyprus this week. Meeting with Cypriot president Glavcos Clirides and Turkish-Cypriot leaders, she continued US efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.

BALKAN KIDS

40 young people from Balkan countries are spending part of their summer holidays on the Aegean island of Leros, guests of the local orthodox diocese, working in cooperation with the Interbalkan Youth Federation.

The visit is a chance for Orthodox Christians from many countries to get to know each other better.
