  • [01] Wildfire on Mount Athos receding

The wildfire on Mount Athos is receding after a period of five days. Firemen and their equipment are remaining in the area after beginning their efforts on Wednesday, when the wildfire broke out. Tackling the blaze are 64 vehicles and 175 firemen, while 15 aircraft and five helicopters are on standby.

    [02] Two wildfires in progress

A wildfire was reported on Sunday on the island of Rhodes in the area of Maritsa. Six fire engines with a 12 member crew and a water dropping helicopter are battling with the blaze.

Another wildfire was in progress on Sunday in Sofiko, Corinth prefecture. Two firefighting aircrafts, a water dropping helicopter assisted by nine fire-engines and firemen on foot are currently operating in the area.

[03] Greek FM speaks on phone with his Albanian counterpart

Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos on Sunday spoke on the phone with his Albanian counterpart Edmond Panariti.

The two officials discussed bilateral issues, regional cooperation issues as well as the European prospect of the region.

Avramopoulos invited Panariti to visit Athens in early September.

[04] Police probing slaying of young foreign national

Police are searching for the perpetrators of an attack on a young Iraqi national in Anaxagora street in downtown Athens at dawn on Sunday. The man was injured by a sharp object (possibly a knife) and died at about 13:15.

According to reports, the perpetrators were five people who used four motorcycles and who had attempted to attack another two nationals in the same area earlier on (a Romanian and Moroccan) who succeeded in getting away.

Public Order and Citizen's Protection Minister Nikolaos Dendias expressed his sorrow to the victim's family and stressed that the state will be relentless with all the perpetrators of criminal acts.

[05] KKE party calls on people not to tolerate inhuman violence against immigrants

The Communist Party of Greece (KKE), in an announcement on Sunday, places grave responsibilities on the government over the slaying of a young Iraqi. KKE also called on the people not to tolerate inhuman violence against immigrants.

[06] Police operation reveals four cannabis plantations in Rethimno

Police forces have detected a total of 2,609 cannabis trees during a third extensive sweep in the prefecture of Rethimno, on the island of Crete, on Sunday.

A plantation was detected in western Ano Valsamo with 1,510 trees, a small plantation in Koufi and two in Kalamas having about 800 trees.

Police forces in Rethimno have been sweeping mountainous and lowland areas recently for the purpose of detecting cannabis plantations.

[07] Thirty two illegal migrants repatriated

Thirty two illegal immigrants were repatriated on Friday. Specifically, 4 Chinese, 1 Armenian, 23 Albanians, 1 Lithuanian, 2 Romanians, and one Sierra Leone citizen were sent back to their native countries following a repatriation issue for illegal entrance into Greece.

The repatriation of all illegal migrants except the five Albanians was carried out with flights from Athens' International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos". The five Albanians were sent back by road.

The repatriations of the illegal migrants are conducted within the framework against illegal migration and the cost is covered by the European Fund for Repatriations, excluding the repatriation of Romanian and Polish citizens which cost is covered by their countries' national Funds.

    [08] Illegal migrants arrests

A total of 51 foreign nationals, all from central or south Asia, were found loaded onto a stolen truck abandoned by alleged migrants smugglers on Friday afternoon on the Athens-Patras highway.

Authorities suspect that the foreign nationals -- 30 Afghans, 13 Pakistanis and eight men from Bangladesh -- were being transported to western Greece for an attempt to smuggle them to Italy, either clandestinely aboard an Italy-bound ferry boat or by loading them onto a small vessel from some remote beach, which would then attempt to off-loaded them on Italian territory.

During a subsequent investigation 20 of the foreign nationals were arrested as illegal migrants. The other foreign nationals were released.

The port of Patras continues to be a magnet for mostly Third World migrants that illegally enter and reside in Greece before attempting to sneak into western Europe. Most illegally enter Greece from neighbouring Turkey, some having also illegally entered Turkey, but others arriving as "tourists" in the EU candidate country.

[09] Attempted rape incident in NE Greece

A 25-year-old Armenian man was arrested early Saturday in Didymotiho, extreme northeastern Greece, charged with attempted rape.

Police said a would-be victim, a 19-year-old local woman, was returning to her residence when an unknown individual assaulted and attempted to rape her.

Local residents who heard a commotion intervened, while the suspect fled.

Police later arrested the foreign national in relation to the incident.
