[01] Georgievski, Papandreou discuss latest FYROM developmentsAthens, 20/08/2001 (ANA)Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou met with Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski on Saturday evening at a resort in Crete for talks focusing on the latest developments in the neighboring country.Georgievski, who is on holiday in Greece, reportedly requested economic aid from Greece during the 45-minute meeting, sources said. Earlier in the day, Papandreou called recent developments in FYROM positive following the conclusion of a political agreement between the Skopje government and the two main ethnic Albanian parties. “I believe that conditions today in FYROM are, of course, better, although without having overcome the dangers, but there is a new dynamic. The political agreement, as well as the military agreement that was concluded in the form of a truce, despite its problems, should be supported by all forces within the country as well,” Papandreou said. He also noted that “we are in constant contact with all the leaders of Skopje, because we play an important role in the effort not only to stabilize but to also reconstruct the country, since Greece is a major investor there.” Papandreou on PASOK congress: Meanwhile, commenting on the upcoming PASOK party congress in October, Papandreou told a local TV station that it should be prepared through a “deep-rooted, substantial and democratic reform” Turning to the election for PASOK’s president at the congress, Papandreou declined to comment on the issue of “blank votes”, instead returning to the situation in FYROM, where he aired a hope that “ethnic differences in FYROM will soon be resolved based on the recently signed agreement, in order – along with everything else– for us to derive a lasting resolution to the name issue.” [02] Tsohatzopoulos calls for 'social consent' course on major policy issuesAthens, 20/08/2001 (ANA)Defense Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos spoke twice at a large gathering of northern Greece PASOK cadres and political allies over the weekend, where he again stressed the need for “social consent” regarding policies applying to social security, employment, the economy and foreign policy, among others.As expected, positions, planks and proposals dominated discussions and exchanges at the gathering in light of ruling PASOK party’s stepped up congress in October. The event was held in the Poseidi resort, Halkidiki prefecture. Tsohatzopoulos reiterated what he called a need for “a change in policy” by the government, while specifically mentioning social security, employment, economic policy as well as tourism, education and foreign affairs. Several PASOK deputies from the greater region were also in attendance. [03] Council of State overturns decision allowing construction of prison in ArcadiaAthens, 20/08/2001 (ANA)The Council of State (CoS) overturned a ministry of culture decision allowing the construction of a high security prison near an archaeological site in Arcadia prefecture, the Peloponnese.A citizens’ group from Arcadia, sought recourse requesting the overturning of the decision of the ministry to allow the construction on the Horholio Hill near the municipality of Silimnas. According to an announcement, the Council of State's decision, to overturn plans to build the new penitentiary was judged on an archeological law, pleasing the "Union of Arcadians and Friends of Arcadia", who fought against the state decision. The Fifth Session of the Council of State's decision 2668/2001, ruled that the area was not properly surveyed for the construction project. According to the same announcement, the Greek court judged that the penitentiary could not be constructed in an area that was not included in an existing a town-plan. [04] Greek state fertilizer company to go publicAthens, 20/08/2001 (ANA)The state owned and operated chemical fertilizer company begun the process to be listed in the Athens Stock exchange, following its merger with the Chemical Industries of Northern Greece, it was announced on Sunday.The Phosphate Fertilizer Industry SA retains its name after the merger and will issue 27,359,000 shares with a nominal price of 1,000 drachmas. The combined turnover of the two merged companies stands at 80 billion drachmas. [05] Twelve people killed in accidents throughout Greece on SundayAthens, 20/08/2001 (ANA)Athenians begun their return to the city on Sunday afternoon and 12 people were killed, while another 178 were injured in 109 accidents throughout the country, despite strict measures undertaken by highway patrol officers.[06] Int'l sculpture symposium focuses on Thassos' white marbleAthens, 20/08/2001 (ANA)An international sculpture symposium on the verdant northern Greek island of Thassos is expected to bring together several noted artists over the next 20 days to work with the distinct white marble quarried in the region.All of the works will subsequently remain on Thassos, where an academy of sculpture is set to open in the near future. The entire event is sponsored by the Thassos and Kavala marble producers' association and the Eastern Macedonia-Thrace regional district along with the Greek embassy in The Hague. Dutch artists Da Van Daalen and Eppe De Haan, as well as Belgians Christian Le Ponce and Christine Joine will be joined by four Greek sculptors. Entrance to the public at the worksite is free, while the artists begin work on Monday at the Skala Kallirahi site [07] Greek under-21 water polo team wins world championshipAthens, 20/08/2001 (ANA)Greece's under-21 men's water polo team on Sunday won the gold medal at the World Championship in Istanbul, beating Croatia in a cliff-hanger 8-7 to take first place.[08] Destruction of Cyprus’ cultural heritage detailedNICOSIA, 20/08/2001 (CNA/ANA)The international community is duty-bound to help preserve Cyprus' cultural heritage in the occupied by Turkish troops area of Cyprus, House President Demetris Christofias said on Sunday.Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of a photo exhibition on the destruction of Cyprus' cultural heritage in the occupied areas of the island, held today in Greece where he is paying a three-day visit, Christofias said the House of Representatives has repeatedly brought the issue up in several international fora, "only to gain very little from this effort. "He pointed out that the House of Representatives would soon prepare a special program aiming at providing continuous information to the international community on the issue. According to information gathered by the Cypriot authorities, over 500 churches and other monuments in the areas of Cyprus occupied by Turkey since 1974 have been desecrated, looted or used for other purposes, some of them hundreds of years old, while time has taken its toll on other sites that are in desperate need for restoration. Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37 per cent of its territory [09] Christofias on Cyprus solutionNICOSIA, 20/08/2001 (CNA/ANA)House President Demetris Christofias said on Sunday that a solution to the Cyprus problem based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation should lead to a unified state and rule out any form of division, secession or integration with another country. Speaking at a memorial service, for those killed during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, held within the framework of "The Cyprus Week" events in Greece, where he is paying a three-day visit, Christofias said Cyprus will not submit to black-mailing dilemmas in view of its accession to the European Union adding the people of Cyprus will not accept any drafts on a solution that would aim at combining federation and confederation.UN-led proximity talks, aiming at reaching an overall settlement of the Cyprus problem, were interrupted last year when Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash, backed by Ankara, abandoned the talks, which started in December 1999, declaring them "dead" and demanding recognition of his self-styled regime in the Turkish-occupied part of Cyprus before he returns to the dialogue. Christofias said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan should work towards the implementation of human rights in Cyprus for all its people and called on the UN Security Council to deal with Turkish threats against Cyprus pointing out that the side responsible for sustaining the current deadlock in the efforts to find a solution to the problem should be held accountable for its actions. He also said the European Union should create a policy to prevent Turkey from creating crisis situations in Cyprus.
