Georgiadis): Foreign Minister Karolos Papoulias was met on arrival in Belgrade yesterday afternoon by Yugoslav Foreign Minister Vladislav Jovanovic on what is the first stop in the Greek minister's week-long tour of Balkan capitals. The two had a meeting at 7:30 pm Greek time yesterday, which was attended by delegations from both sides. "My visit to Belgrade in my double capacity of Greek Foreign Minister and future president of the European Union is the beginning of a very interesting itinerary. I am certain that the talks will be interesting and, in our capacity as a Balkan state, we shall find the road to the solution of the Yugoslav problem", Mr. Papoulias said. Mr. Papoulias will remain in Belgrade for two days and is expected to meet with the federal political leadership today, as well as hold a second meeting with Mr. Jovanovic. This afternoon Mr. Papoulias will be received by Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic and later by a representative of the Serbian patriarch and opposition leaders. Invoking political and diplomatic circles, the Tanjug news agency yesterday described Mr. Papoulias' visit to Belgrade as "important, because of Greece's role in the Balkans and because of the assumption of the EC Presidency by Greece on January 1, 1994". According to Tanjug, the subjects to be discussed by Mr. Papoulias are the Yugoslav crisis, the sanctions imposed on rump Yugoslavia and certain bilateral issues. Tomorrow, Mr. Papoulias will visit Montenegro for talks with its leadership and then go to Sarajevo and Zagreb where he will spend the night. He will visit Ljubljana on Wednesday. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): The main opposition New Democracy party Saturday called on the government to clarify its position on UN talks on the issue of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM). "We call on the government to clarify to the Greek people in an explicit manner whether or not it will continue the dialogue (with FYROM) in the framework of the United Nations Organisation and, finally, what is the policy it attends to follow", an announcement by New Democracy said. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): The sessions of the Third Inter-Balkan Meeting of Journalists, ended yesterday in Alexandroupolis. journalists and academics who participated in the four-day long meeting exchanged views and discussed the situation prevailing in the mass media. It was noted that persecution of Journalists and obstacles put in the execution of their task are increasing daily. The involvement of major economic interests in the mass news media renders working conditions even more difficult. The president of the Balkan Press Centre and of the Union of Journalists of Thrace, Antonis Kourtis, will endeavour to project the most important of these problems to the world at large. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): National Defence Under-secretary Nikos Kouris yesterday attended a memorial service at the Dekelia Airport on the occasion of the feastday of the airforce's patron saint, Archangel Michael. "I paid tribute today on behalf of the ministry to the airmen who fell in action in an effort to defend the interests of the country. Our airforce has paid a heavy toll of blood in peacetime", the under-secretary said. After the service, Mr. Kouris laid a wreath on the monument for fallen airmen. Wreaths were also laid by the leadership of the Air Force and other officials. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): A delegation from rump Yugoslavia arrived in Thessaloniki Saturday to discuss procedures for the dispatch of humanitarian aid collected by the Thessaloniki Chamber of handicraft Industries. The delegation is headed by Yugoslav Federal Science and Technology Minister Slobodan umkovic, Tourism and Economy Minister Jorjevic Radija and Cucarica Mayor Vladimir Matic and includes Serbian and Montenegrin Chamber President Dragan Marcovic, the Federal Yugoslav General Consul in the city Raiko Ristic and the members of Cucarica's municipal council. The Yugoslav delegation was welcomed by Thessaloniki handicraft Industry President Dimitris Paneras and second vice-president Dimitris Lainas. Details concerning the delivery of the humanitarian aid -- which is composed of 22 tonnes of foodstuffs, two tonnes of medicines and medical instruments and two tonnes of clothing worth over 200,000 dollars -- were discussed. Mr. Paneras will head the delegation which is due to leave on Friday and return on November 15. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): The European Socialist Party held a special conference in Brussels this weekend to adopt an electoral manifesto in view of the 1994 European elections. The party's manifesto was prepared by the party's presidency, which included PASOK's Central Committee International Relations Secretary Christos Papoutsis and Leonidas Intzipeoglou. A 14-member PASOK delegation headed by Central Committee Secretary and Interior Minister Akis Tsohatzopoulos attended the conference. In a brief address, Mr. Tsohatzopoulos said the European Parliament should be strengthened, the Community should be "deepened as well as widened" and the creation of a two-speed Europe avoided. Mr. Tsohatzopoulos emphasised the importance of European security, adding that the success of the European union's foreign policy would depend on its policy in the Balkans -- where a joint Balkan policy is required as is the resolution of individual differences and economic support for Balkan countries -- and in Russia where democratisation should be promoted. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): Greece yesterday denied Albanian allegations that a Greek warship had violated Albanian territorial waters. "Reports of an alleged violation of Albania's territorial waters by a vessel of the Greek War Navy are totally unfounded", a National Defence ministry announcement said. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): The Greek flag will be raised on the new gunboat Agon at the naval station on Crete today, according to an announcement by the Navy General Staff. The new gunboat is the fifth and last of the Thetis class to be delivered to the Greek Navy by the German government in the framework of NATO defence aid. New York, 8/11/1993 (ANA): George Stephanopoulos, the Greek-American adviser to US President Bill Clinton, was yesterday awarded the 16th Homerian Prize at a special ceremony held at the House of Chios in New York. The Federation of Chios is one of the first federal organisations in the united States, created in 1974 right after the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. It consists of 23 associations with 4,000 active members. Previous recipients of the Homerian Prize include Senator John Braedemas, Senator Edward Kennedy, Claiborne Pell, Speaker Tip O' Neill, Senator Paoul Sarbanes, Alphonse d' Amato, former President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop Iakovos and President of Greece Constantine Karamanlis. Athens, 8/11/1993 (ANA): Archbishop Serapheim of Athens and All Greece returned to Athens yesterday at the end of a seven-day visit to the United States at the invitation of Archbishop Iakovos of North and South America. During his stay in the United States, the Archbishop underwent a series of medical tests.
