[02] Women's Day: Europe keeps women's empowerment high on its global agenda

On the occasion of the International Women's Day on 8 March, which this year carries the theme 'Women and men united to end violence against women and girls', Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner reaffirms the Commission's continuing political and financial commitment to fight for women rights. Empowerment of women is a topic which continues to be high on the EU's global agenda. In 2008, Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner led an initiative of 40 world women leaders from politics, business and civil society that called for a new momentum in the effective implementation of UN Resolution 1325 on women, peace and security. Following their recommendation, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has agreed to convene a Ministerial Conference in 2010 to take stock of progress achieved and to examine ways to further enhance the impact of Resolution 1325. Also on the occasion of the International Women's Day, the European Commission launches, under the patronage of Princess Mathilde of Belgium, an international drawing competition for children on gender equality which calls upon children from third countries to express their vision of gender equality. So far almost 60,000 children, aged 8 to 10, from 61 countries from all corners of the globe have participated in the competition.

[03] Future of Transport: Commission stages conference in Brussels to discuss scenarios for the next 40 years

Policy makers and top managers of the most important transport operators, manufacturers and logistic companies will gather in Brussels on 9-10 March at a conference convened by Vice President Tajani to discuss the future challenges for the transport sector and kick off the preparation of the 2010 White Paper on the Future of Transport Policy.

[05] International Women's Day – EC Vice President Margot Wallström, and Commissioner for Health, Androulla Vassiliou, to participate in the International Colloquium on Women's Leadership in Liberia

Margot Wallström, European Commission Vice-President for Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy and Commissioner for Health, Androulla Vassiliou, are attending the International Colloquium on Women's Leadership, Empowerment, Peace and Security in Monrovia, Liberia, 7-8 March. The Colloquium coincides with International Women's Day on 8 March and provides an important platform for promoting women's empowerment at a global level. The principle of equality between men and women is a core value of the European Union, both in its internal and external policies.

[06] 8 March 2009: International Women’s Day - Proportion of female physicians, tertiary level academic staff and managers increasing

How many women are there in the EU27? How many of them are below 25 or above 65 years of age? What is the difference in salary between women and men? What proportion of physicians, tertiary level academic staff and managers are women? What percentage of students in tertiary education and in particular in engineering, business or education are women? Do women use the internet more or less than men? Answers to these questions and to others can be found in this News Release, published by Eurostat on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2009. This News Release presents just a small selection of the large amount of gender based data available from Eurostat.

[07] March 2009 Monthly monitor on the EU employment situation and social outlook

Latest data up to February 2009 show a more marked impact of the economic downturn on the labour market in the EU, with unemployment rates rising in all but four Member States. There are also signs of continuing reduced demand for labour among employers, although on average unemployment rates across Europe continue to be less affected than in the US. The Commission's March 2009 monthly monitoring report includes a special focus on the construction industry, heavily affected by the downturn, and retail trade, which by contrast is showing some resilience. <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=120&langId=en">http://ec.europa.eu/social/main.jsp?catId=120&langId=en

[08] Commission adopts compulsory origin labelling for virgin and extra virgin olive oil

The European Commission today adopted a new Regulation making it compulsory to label the origin of virgin and extra virgin olive oil. Rules introduced in 2002 established optional labelling for these oils, but this proved insufficient to prevent consumers being misled about the true characteristics and origin of certain products. "Different agricultural traditions and varied extraction and blending practices mean that the taste of olive oils from different countries can be very distinct. For this reason and in line with the traceability rules in European food law, the time is right to introduce compulsory origin labelling. Consumers deserve to know what they are buying and producers need to be able use their quality production methods as a marketing tool," said Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development. Oils originating from just one country will carry the name of the Member State, or of the third country or of the Community. Blends will be labelled either "blend of Community olive oils", "blend of non-Community olive oils" "blend of Community and non-Community olive oils" or equivalent information. Certain terms such as 'fruity', 'green', 'mature', 'mild' and 'well-balanced' - which have recently been defined by the International Olive Council - may also be used on virgin and extra virgin olive oil labels for oils complying with the definitions. The new rules will apply from 1 July 2009. These rules complement the rules for specific oils which are protected as part of the system of Geographic Indications and are designed to offer further guarantees to consumers that what they buy in a sealed container corresponds with their preferences and expectations.
