  • [01] EU Globalisation Fund pays €3.1 million to help redundant workers in Portugal and Malta

The European Commission today made payments totalling €3.1 million to the Portuguese and Maltese authorities from the European Globalisation adjustment Fund (EGF). This is made up of € 2.4 million to help 1,549 Portuguese auto workers get back into work as quickly as possible and a further €681,000 for 675 dismissed Maltese textile workers. The payments follow approval by the Budgetary Authority (the European Parliament and the Council) on 10 April 2008.

[02] New Gateway Programme to assist European companies to develop their business in Japan and Korea

From 2 June 2008 the EU Gateway Programme provides professional mentoring and coaching to EU companies that want to do business in Japan and Korea and offers them the possibility to participate in one-week business events in these target markets. The new phase of this business cooperation programme builds upon the experience of the Gateway to Japan Campaign which has helped about 2.500 European companies to find business partners in Japan over the last 14 years.

[03] Culture Ministers discuss creation of a joint Euro-Mediterranean cultural strategy

Culture ministers and civil society representatives from the 39 members of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership meet in Athens on 29/30 May to exchange views on the cultural dimension of the partnership and to explore the substance and scope of a joint cultural strategy. They will discuss the political processes and mechanisms that will lead to the creation of a Euro- Mediterranean Cultural Strategy.

[04] May 2008: Business Climate Indicator for the euro area picks up slightly in May

After a drop in April, the Business Climate Indicator (BCI) for the euro area picked up slightly in May. Nonetheless, the downward trend of the BCI and the deceleration in industrial production registered in March point to a weakening of industrial activity in the second quarter of 2008. The increase in the BCI is mainly due to an improvement in industry managers' appraisals of the production trend in recent months. Managers' assessments of their export order books deteriorated slightly, while their production expectations and their views on total order books and stocks of finished products remained unchanged.

[05] May 2008: Economic sentiment decreases further in the EU and remains stable in the euro area

In May, the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI) decreased further by 1.3 points to 96.7 in the EU and remained unchanged in the euro area at 97.1. In both regions, the ESI stands below its long-term average.

[06] EC-Norway Energy Dialogue: boosting cooperation in the internal energy market, offshore wind and Carbon Capture and Storage projects

Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs and Norwegian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Mrs Åslaug Haga, met in Brussels today to exchange views on various energy related issues of mutual interest. Particular emphasis was placed on bilateral cooperation, liberalisation of the energy markets and focus on renewable energy and the commitment of both sides to promote Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects. Norway is the EU's second most important supplier of oil and gas – gas imports from Norway are expected to reach 100 BCM this year. –EMBARGO 13h30 -

- EMBARGO 15h30 -

[08] Antitrust: Commission report on car block exemption shows that competition has improved

Conditions for competition have improved in recent years on the markets for both new cars and repair and maintenance according to an evaluation report just adopted by the European Commission on the block exemption Regulation governing the application of EC Treaty rules on restrictive business practices (Article 81) to motor vehicle distribution and repair agreements (Regulation 1400/2002).
