  • [01] Women in power still trapped by glass ceiling – EU report

Despite recent progress, women in Europe are still shut out of top posts in both politics and business, says a new European Commission report. Across the EU, 24% of parliamentarians are women – up from 16% a decade ago – with a similar proportion holding ministerial office. In the private sector, men still represent 9 out of 10 board members in top companies and two- thirds of company bosses. The report coincides with International Women's Day on 8 March and comes ahead of a new European network of women in power, to be launched later this year.

[03] "Women wanted in Europe's ICT industry"!

Careers in information and communications technology (ICT) are often thought to be restricted to men. Such a common stereotype is far from the truth. Although the proportion of women graduating in engineering or computer science is still very low, young girls can expect a successful and rewarding career in the ICT sector. This topic is at the core of a conference organised today, ahead of International Women's day (8 March), in Brussels, where the European Commission will encourage young girls in Europe to "Move out of the shadow and seize the opportunITy".

[05] EU-Egypt: Commissioner Ferrero-Waldner and Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation Aboulnaga sign €558 million assistance package

Commissioner for External Relations and the European Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner and the Egyptian Minister of International Cooperation, Fayza Aboulnaga, will sign on 7 March the Memorandum of Understanding regarding the National Indicative Programme 2007-2010. The focus of the €558 million assistance package under the European Neighbourhood Policy is to support the reform process and the implementation of the EU-Egypt ENP Action Plan which was adopted by the EU- Egypt Association Council on 6 March 2007. It demonstrates the EU's commitment to support Egypt in its national priorities for reform and progress. Egypt is one of the main beneficiaries of EU support in the region and the EU is the second largest donor to Egypt.

[07] A third of managers are women - More women go to the theatre and more men to sports events

What is the average age of women at the birth of their first child? At what age do women and men get married? What are the employment and unemployment rates for women? What is the proportion of female teachers? What proportion of managers or Members of national Parliaments are women? What are the differences in cultural activities of women and men? Answers to these questions and to other can be found in this News Release published on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on 8 March 2008. On the same occasion, Eurostat also releases the publication "The life of women and men in Europe".

[08] Record year for Community trade marks and designs

Over the past four years, the cumulative change at the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (Trade Marks and Designs, (OHIM) has been dramatic, with a 50% increase in trade mark and design applications and a rise in productivity of almost 60%. In 2007, the Office dealt with around 90,000 applications for CTMs and almost 80,000 applications for the Registered Community Design (RCD). Over the same period the average time to register a trade mark has fallen by one-third to 13 months, and the time taken to register a design has fallen by 60% to six weeks. OHIM’s annual report, published on 6 March 2008, shows that in 2007, demand for Community trade marks was up 13% on the previous year and applications for designs rose by 10%. [09] Women: Stabilising an Insecure World, Brussels 6th March 2008, Conference Statement

On the eve of International Women's Day, we call for internationally agreed human rights standards and instruments to be implemented with renewed vigor, including UN Security Council Resolution 1325. The contribution that women make to the security of their families, their communities, and the world is still too often overlooked. Women’s rights are human rights. Women’s security is human security. We commit ourselves to ensuring that women are actively engaged in local, national and international decision-making and call upon leaders everywhere, male and female, to do the same. We pay tribute to women who in the face of hostility, discrimination or repression persevere in their struggle for justice and democracy. We call for the immediate liberation of Aung San Suu Kyi and Ingrid Betancourt who symbolise this spirit of determination. We condemn unreservedly the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. We salute the countless women who rebuild societies and families shattered by conflict and disaster, and who have the courage to lay the foundations of local stability, without which there can be no global security. We commit ourselves to address the particular vulnerability of women in the face of security threats old and new, including poverty, natural disasters, violent conflict, and climate change. We note with deep concern the targeting of women and children in contemporary conflicts and the use of sexual violence as a method of warfare. We call for effective action to bring perpetrators of such crimes to justice, to end the environment of impunity in which they operate. We call for the outlawing of violent practices aimed at controlling or repressing women, such as genital mutilation and stoning, as well as trafficking in women. We commit ourselves to strengthen dialogue with those governments and leaders sceptical of the need to enhance women's empowerment. In particular we will promote education for women and girls, which is the key to women's empowerment and to ensuring that women play their part in shaping a more secure future for themselves, their communities, their countries and our world.

[10] EU-US Foreign Ministers Troika meeting in Brussels

Commissioner for External Relations and European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner will attend today's EU-US Ministerial meeting together with Slovene Foreign Minister Dimitrij Rupel, who currently holds the EU Presidency, EU High Representative Javier Solana and their US counterpart, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. During the meeting the two sides will exchange views on international issues like Western Balkans, Afghanistan, Russia and the Middle East. They will also discuss the preparations for the EU-US Summit and the Visa Waiver Programme.
