    [01] EU interim forecasts: growth moderates while inflation temporarily surges

    Economic growth is expected to slow to 2.0% this year in the European Union (1.8% in the euro area) as some of the downside risks identified in the autumn forecasting exercise – the ongoing financial turmoil, a sharp slowdown in the US, and high commodity prices – have materialised. This is 0.4 percentage point less, for both areas, than forecast in November. Inflation this year is expected to average 2.9% in the EU and 2.6% in the euro area following the strong rise in food and energy prices. This is ½ a percentage point more than compared to the previous forecast. But inflation is expected to return to more normal levels in the last quarter of 2008.

    [02] European Union to observe first National Assembly Elections in the Kingdom of Bhutan

    The European Commission will deploy a 15-member strong EU Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the first elections of a National Assembly in Bhutan scheduled to take place on 24 March 2008. The EU EOM, led by Mr. José Javier Pomés Ruiz, Member of the European Parliament, will go out on 22 February and will stay for a period of seven weeks on the ground. The EU attaches great importance to the process of democratic transition in Bhutan, including the elections and the adoption of the constitution.

    [03] Enregistrement de six dénominations de produits agricoles

    La Commission européenne a ajouté six dénominations de produits agricoles et alimentaires à la liste des appellations d'origine protégées (AOP) et indications géographiques protégées (IGP). Il s'agit des produits italiens "Pane di Matera" (Pain – IGP) et "Tinca Gobba Dorata del Pianalto di Poirino" (Poisson – AOP) et de quatre légumes de l'île de Reichenau en Allemagne: "Salate von der Insel Reichenau", "Gurken von der Insel Reichenau", "Feldsalat von der Insel Reichenau" et "Tomaten von der Insel Reichenau" (les quatre comme IGP). Les six dénominations s'ajoutent à la liste d'environ 800 produits déjà protégés en vertu de la législation sur la protection des indications géographiques, des appellations d'origine et des spécialités traditionnelles.     [04] Nouvel ensemble de programmes de développement rural accepté pour la période 2007-2013

    Le comité pour le développement rural (composé de représentants des 27 États membres) a émis aujourd'hui un avis favorable sur les programmes de développement rural présentés pour la période de financement 2007-2013 par l’Italie (Molise), la Roumanie, l’Espagne (Andalousie, Aragon, Asturies, La Rioja et Communauté de Valence) et le Royaume-Uni (pays de Galles). Ces programmes visent à maintenir les infrastructures, à créer de nouvelles sources de revenu pour les zones rurales, à promouvoir la croissance et à lutter contre le chômage. La Commission doit encore adopter officiellement les programmes concernés dans les prochaines semaines. L’approbation des programmes des autres pays et régions est prévue pour les mois à venir.

    [05] Commissioner Olli Rehn welcomes the adoption of the new Turkish law on Foundations

    The adoption of the new law on Foundations is a welcome step forward. This is an important issue for Turkey, and one that all EU institutions have regularly highlighted as important to ensure fundamental rights and freedoms for all Turkish citizens. We need to study the official text, but previous drafts and parliamentary debates indicate that the law addresses a number of issues crucial for the functioning of religious foundations. Implementation of this law should be in accordance with the provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights and the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights. It is implementation that will be the test of Turkey's progress in ensuring rights and freedoms.
