  • [01] Commission launches PEGASE - a new mechanism to support the Palestinian people

The European Commission will launch next February 1st the PEGASE mechanism, a new instrument to channel EU and international assistance as a contribution to the building of the Palestinian State and as a follow-up to the current Temporary International Mechanism (TIM). PEGASE will run for the next three years. Based on the Reform and Development Plan of the Palestinian Authority, it will channel assistance to four key areas: governance, social development, economic and private sector development, and public infrastructure.

[02] European Commission to launch study on unleashing talent and creativity in Europe

Representatives from the EU's Culture Ministries met in Cannes on 27 January to discuss the challenges facing the music industry at an informal meeting held to coincide with the start of this year's MIDEM international trade fair for the music and recording industry. At the event, European Commissioner Ján Figel' announced the launch of a study on the role of culture, and the EU's cultural industries, in promoting and stimulating creativity, innovation and growth in the EU.

[03] Commissioner Hübner to attend launch of innovative projects in East and South-East of England

Danuta Hübner, Commissioner for Regional Policy, will pay a two-day visit to the South-East and East of England, at the invitation of the local authorities and the two regional development agencies. She will attend launch events for new programmes funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), tailor-made for these regions for the next seven years. The Commissioner will also attend the launches of EU co-funded projects.

[04] Joint statement by the European Commission and the European Central Bank welcoming the formal launch of SEPA payment instruments by EU banks (see MEMO/08/51 and MEMO/08/52)

Today SEPA (the Single Euro Payments Area) goes live and European banks will formally launch the first SEPA payment instrument for credit transfers. This marks the first step in a migration process over the next few years during which customers will move in a market-led process from existing national electronic payment instruments to the new SEPA instruments. This is a logical extension to the introduction of the euro and will produce substantial benefits through a more competitive and efficient payments market.

[05] European Data Protection Day 2008

The 28th of January 2008 marks the second European Data Protection Day. An occasion where we once again acknowledge and highlight the importance to citizens of protection of their privacy, including, in particular, their personal data. The internet, travel arrangements, health treatment, credit cards – the protection of personal data is important on every step of our daily lives. Each year advances in technology allow for increases in data sharing, which can assist in improving the lives of citizens including enhancing their security. In line with this, it is our resolve to ensure the sharing of data is harnessed in conformity with rules and laws laid down to ensure respect for the confidence of personal data. We therefore take this opportunity to highlight to all data handlers, data controllers and data providers the importance to all of us of data protection.

[06] Commission launches user-friendly information service on how EU rules apply to services of general interest.

The European Commission has today launched an interactive, web-based service to provide clear and practical information for stakeholders on how EU rules apply to services of general interest, which cover areas such as health, social services, energy, telecommunications, transport, radio and television, postal services and schools. This interactive service was announced, in response to widespread demand, as part of the Commission's single market review in November 2007. It provides individual replies to stakeholders' requests for information, clarification and guidance. Replies to the most frequently asked questions will be posted on the site. A first set of answers on state aid and EU procurement law is already there. As well as giving stakeholders the information they need, the service will help the Commission to better understand and monitor problems arising on the ground. It is available in French, English and German. All other EU official languages will be added as soon as possible. The site is accessible via: http://ec.europa.eu/services_general_interest/. For further background on services of general interest, see MEMO/07/475.
