  • [01] Antitrust: European Commission welcomes Apple's announcement to equalise prices for music downloads from iTunes in Europe

The European Commission welcomes Apple's announcement to equalise prices for downloads of songs from its iTunes online store in Europe within the next six months. This puts an end to the different treatment of UK consumers who currently have to pay higher prices for downloads. The different treatment to UK consumers was a major concern for Which?, a UK consumer protection organisation, who filed a formal complaint with the Commission. The Commission’s antitrust proceedings have also clarified that it is not agreements between Apple and the major record companies which determine how the iTunes store is organised in Europe. Consequently, the Commission does not intend to take further action in this case.

[03] New Commission analysis looks at the role of India in world agriculture

India is one of the fastest growing economies in the world today and among the world's leading agricultural producers and yet its trade flows are relatively small compared with other main players. However, given the size of Indian agriculture, even small changes in its trade have a potentially large impact on world markets. That is one of the conclusions of the latest MAP (Monitoring Agri-trade Policy), published by the Commission's Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development. India has a large and diverse agriculture and is also a major consumer, with an expanding population to feed. The average size of holding is just 1.4 hectares and 60% of the workforce depends on agriculture for a living. The latest MAP looks at India's trade patterns with the EU and globally. It also examines India's agriculture and trade policy and attempts to shed light on the impact of these policies on trade.

The MAP is available at <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/publi/map/03_07.pdf">http://ec.europa.eu/agriculture/publi/map/03_07.pdf

[04] Euro area GDP and EU27 GDP up by 0.8%

Euro area (EA13) and EU27 GDP both grew by 0.8% in the third quarter of 2007, compared with the previous quarter, according to second estimates from Eurostat. In the second quarter of 2007, growth rates were +0.3% in the euro area and +0.5% in the EU27. In comparison with the same quarter of the previous year, seasonally adjusted GDP grew in the third quarter of 2007 by 2.7% in the euro area and by 3.0% in the EU27, after +2.5% and +2.8% respectively in the previous quarter. In the third quarter of 2007 and among the Member States for which seasonally adjusted GDP data are available, Lithuania (+5.2%) recorded the highest growth rate compared with the previous quarter, followed by Latvia (+2.8%) and Slovakia (+2.5%).
