  • [01] Parents need better information on genetic testing of IVF embryos

A new report by European Commission scientists shows that urgent guidelines are needed for the counselling of patients that opt to screen their embryos created by in vitro fertilisation (IVF) for serious genetic disorders, and there is a need for specific quality assurance schemes. Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is the practice of testing embryos for conditions such as Huntington's, haemophilia and cystic fibrosis before they are implanted in the mother. As the first report to give a full picture of this practice at European level, it shows that PGD is a well-established practice in many Member States, but regulations, standards and accreditation requirements can differ widely

[02] Cohesion policy: Eastern neighbours to share EU experience in cross- border cooperation

Regional Policy Commissioner Danuta Hübner today gave a keynote speech on cross-border cooperation at a conference in ŻagaD, Poland. Organised by the Polish-German Committee on Interregional Cooperation, the conference brought together representatives of local and regional authorities from both countries to exchange views and experiences of cross-border cooperation on their common frontier. They were joined by observers from regions of Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, and Russia.

[03] European Commission gives a favourable opinion to the new nuclear power plant of Belene, Bulgaria

The Commission has decided today to give a favourable opinion to the initiative of Natsionalna Elektricheska Kompania (NEK) of Bulgaria to build a new nuclear power plant at the site of Belene, according to the requirements of articles 41 to 44 of the Euratom Treaty. Those requirements state that any new investment related to nuclear activities has to be communicated to the Commission which should, in return, send a report with its views to the Member State concerned.

[04] Emissions trading: Commission adopts amendment decision on the Slovak National Allocation Plan for 2008 to 2012

[05] Commission clears acquisition of Novara Assicura by Aviva and Banco Popolare

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Novara Assicura S.p.A. of Italy by Aviva Italia Holding S.p.A. (Aviva) of Italy and Banco Popolare, also of Italy. Aviva owns and manages insurance companies. Banco Popolare is a retail bank. Novara Assicura is a non-life insurance company. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[06] Commission clears acquisition of Christian Salvesen by GND

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Christian Salvesen PLC of the UK by Groupe Norbert Dentressangle S.A. (GND) of France. GND is active in logistics and transport services, primarily in continental Europe. Christian Salvesen provides logistics services for manufacturing and retail customers in the industrial, consumer and food sectors, primarily in the UK, France, Benelux, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
