    Commission welcomes Council's endorsement of the first-ever European Agenda for Culture The Culture Council today agreed on a European Agenda for culture which introduces a more structured system of cooperation and concrete priorities, on the basis of the Commission's proposals presented in May 2007.

    Le 19 novembre, à Lisbonne, la Commission européenne poursuivra ses entretiens avec d’éminents chefs d’entreprises européens sur l’investissement dans les compétences linguistiques et interculturelles des travailleurs. Le commissaire Leonard Orban inaugurera le forum des dirigeants d’entreprises et des responsables des ressources humaines, qui se concentrera sur la collaboration entre les entreprises, le monde de l’enseignement et les pouvoirs publics pour la promotion de l’apprentissage des langues aux fins du développement de l’économie.

    [02] The Commission and the Inter-American Development Bank reinforce co- operation to help development in the region.

    The European Commission and the Inter-American Development Bank will sign on 19 November in Brussels a Memorandum of Understanding to develop common policy priorities and strategies with a view to contribute to the social and economic development of Latin America. The Memorandum's priorities focus on social cohesion and poverty alleviation, regional integration, renewable energy, climate change and statistics. Commissioners for Economic and Monetary Affairs Joaquín Almunia and for External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner will sign on behalf of the Commission and President Luis Alberto Moreno on behalf of the Bank.

    [03] Electronic Stability Control to improve safety of trucks and coaches

    The safety of European registered trucks and tourist coaches will be greatly improved as a result of an agreement reached at a United Nations meeting in Geneva to equip new vehicles with electronic stability control systems. Electronic stability control (ESC) avoids accidents by helping the driver maintain control of the vehicle in critical situations. It is estimated that equipping these vehicles with ESC system could ultimately save over 500 deaths and 2500 serious injuries per year in the European Union.

    The European Commission is organising a Leader+ final conference which will take place in Evora, Portugal on 22-23 November 2007; the event will commemorate the end of the Leader Community Initiative after three programming periods (1991-93, 1994-99, 2000-06).

    [05] Excédent de 3,1 milliards d’euros du commerce extérieur de la zone euro

    D’après les premières estimations pour le mois de septembre 2007, la zone euro (ZE13) a enregistré un excédent du commerce extérieur de 3,1 mrds d’euros avec le reste du monde, comparé à +2,3 mrds en septembre 2006. Le solde enregistré au mois d'août 20072 était de +1,9 mrd, contre -5,4 mrds en août 2006. En septembre 2007, par rapport à août 2007, les exportations corrigées des variations saisonnières ont baissé de 0,4% tandis que les importations ont augmenté de 0,1%. Les premières estimations du solde des échanges extra-UE27 pour le mois de septembre 2007 indiquent un déficit de 16,5 mrds d’euros contre -14,7 mrds en septembre 2006. En août 2007, le solde était de -16,1 mrds, contre -22,5 mrds en août 2006. En septembre 2007 par rapport à août 2007, les exportations corrigées des variations saisonnières ont diminué de 1,1%, tandis que les importations sont restées stables.Ces données sont publiées par Eurostat.

    Commissioner Charlie McCreevy welcomes the US Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) decision to abolish the reconciliation to US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for foreign companies using IFRS as published by the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB).
