[01] Quota cuts needed in most Baltic Sea fisheries in 2008
Today, the European Commission tabled a proposal on fishing possibilities
and associated measures for a number of fish stocks in the Baltic Sea for
2008. The condition of the two cod stocks continue to give serious cause
for concern, with the Western stock which was formerly the stronger of the
two having again fallen outside safe biological limits. Scientists have
also advised that the survival rate of young salmon is deteriorating, and
that there is a need to restrain catches compared to current levels. On the
positive side, the state of the central Baltic herring stock remains good.
The proposed TACs and measures for cod are based on the provisions of the
multi-annual plan to rebuild and maintain Baltic cod stocks, which was
agreed by Council in June this year. The present proposal for fishing
possibilities should be discussed at the October Fisheries Council.
[02] Commission clears acquisition of Hycore by Umicore and Norsk Hydro
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Hycore ANS (Hycore) of
Norway by Umicore of Belgium and Norsk Hydro of Norway. Umicore is active
in advanced materials, precious metal products and catalysts, precious
metal services and zinc specialties. Norsk Hydro develops, produces and
supplies aluminium, oil, gas, hydropower and alternative energy sources.
Hycore develops, manufactures and markets solar grade silicon for
photovoltaic applications. The operation was examined under the simplified
merger review procedure.
[03] Danuta Hübner in Hessen : "The region knows how to play the
innovation card"
On 2 and 3 September, European Regional policy Commissioner Danuta Hübner
is visiting the region of Hessen in Central Germany. It will be the
occasion for launching the new regional programme, adopted by the
Commission last July, which provides for a total budget of €557 million.
The Commissioner meets Mr Roland Koch, Prime Minister of the region and Mr
Volker Hoff, Minister for Federal and EU-affairs, to discuss the new
opportunities the programme will bring for the region. She also
participates in the meeting of the government of Hessen to discuss European
affairs.
