[02] EU-Ukraine start negotiations on new Enhanced Agreement

European Commissioner for External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy, Benita Ferrero-Waldner, and the Ukrainian chief-negotiator, Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Veselovsky will meet on Monday 5 March on the occasion of the official start of the negotiations on a new Enhanced Agreement. The new agreement will reflect on the strategic importance of developing EU-Ukraine relations: The main aim is to draw Ukraine closer to the EU, enhance political cooperation, increase trade and investment and thus contribute to economic development and prosperity in Ukraine. Negotiations will open new prospects for EU-Ukraine relations, including a Free Trade Area and a deeper partnership on energy.

[04] Commission opens in-depth investigation into Sony/BMG recorded music joint-venture

The European Commission has decided to open an in-depth investigation into the merger of the global recorded music businesses of Germany's Bertelsmann AG and Japan's Sony Corp. An earlier Commission decision to approve the merger in July 2004 was annulled by the European Court of First Instance (CFI) on 13th July 2006 (see CJE/06/60). The in-depth inquiry will permit thorough analysis of the complex information required in order for the Commission to ascertain whether or not the merger strengthens or creates a dominant position in these relatively concentrated markets. The opening of an in-depth investigation does not prejudge its final result. The Commission now has four months, until 2nd July 2007, to reach a final decision on whether to approve or veto the merger.

[05] Mariann Fischer Boel visits India to promote 'Tasty Europe'

Mariann Fischer Boel, European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, will visit India from Sunday, 4 March until Saturday 10 March to promote the quality and diversity of European food and drink. The main objective of the visit is to spearhead a promotional effort to increase joint business opportunities in the agri-food sector between the EU and India. During the week long visit, the Commissioner and the business delegation will meet and interact with members of the Indian business community both in Delhi and Mumbai. The delegation will participate in the International Aahar Food Fair in New Delhi, where the EU will have an information stand and where specific promotional activities will be arranged.
