[01] Meeting today’s wireless communication needs: Commission presents
strategy for more flexible use of the radio spectrum
A boost for more innovative use of radio spectrum was given today when the
Commission unveiled its strategy for introducing more flexible radio
frequency usage in reaction to evolving market demands. The strategy
provides concrete steps for reducing access and usage restrictions on this
critical resource for wireless communications, allowing new ideas to
flourish, and removing potential barriers to innovation, economic growth
and consumer choice.
[02] EU Solidarity Fund: Commission proposes € 9.3 million of aid
following flood disaster in Greece
The European Commission has proposed a grant from the European Union
Solidarity Fund (EUSF) totalling some € 9.3 million to offset part of the
costs incurred following the flood disaster that severely hit the Evros
prefecture in March 2006. This financial assistance will be made available
as soon as there is an agreement by the Budget Authority (European
Parliament and Council); it will be used to reimburse the cost of emergency
measures such as rescue services, the provision of temporary housing, the
cleaning up of disaster stricken areas and the restoration of basic
infrastructures to working condition.

La Commission européenne a ajouté 27 dénominations de produits agricoles
et alimentaires la liste des appellations d'origine protégées (AOP) et
indications géographiques protégées (IGP). Il s'agit des produits
suivants: Pour la Belgique: Geraardsbergse mattentaart (IGP). Pour
l'Espagne: Pataca de Galicia ou Patata de Galicia (IGP) - Poniente de

traditionnelles. La Commission a également ajouté la dénomination
néerlandaise "Boerenkaas" la liste des spécialités traditionnelles

[04] Commission clears acquisition of Azelis by 3i Group
The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger
Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Azelis S.A. of Luxembourg
by 3i Group plc of the UK. 3i Group is a private equity and venture capital
company. Azelis is active in specialty chemicals distribution. The
operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.
[05] Statement by Enlargement Commissioner, Olli Rehn on the local
elections in Albania
"I take note of the preliminary assessment of the OSCE/ODIHR Election
Observation Mission on yesterday's local government elections in Albania.
The assessment notes the overall competitive conduct of the elections but
points to a number of shortcomings. Respect for democratic principles is a
fundamental commitment under the Stabilisation and Association Agreement
which Albania signed in June last year. The shortcomings in the preparation
and conduct of these elections reflect the need for improved cross-party co-
operation to fulfil Albania's international commitments. Albania's
political leaders now need to improve the way they work together on
electoral reform and on the many other challenging reforms Albania is
facing in the EU integration process."
[06] EU welcomes first joint WTO-ILO study on trade and employment
Geneva: The European Commission today welcomed the first ever joint study
by the International Labour Organisation and World Trade Organisation on
the relationship between trade and employment. "A better understanding of
the relationship between trade and employment is crucial for effectively
tackling inequalities and promoting more and better jobs – both in
developed and developing countries," said Vladimir Spidla, Commissioner for
Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities. "The European Union and
the ILO are working with developing countries to promote decent work for
all and to strengthen the social dimension of globalisation." Peter
Mandelson, the Commissioner for External Trade added: "I welcome this joint
study – the EU has been encouraging closer collaboration of the WTO and
ILO for some time. This supports the EU's recent initiatives with the ILO
and developing countries to strengthen trade and employment policies and
maximise the social benefits that trade has to offer." Global trade is fast
becoming one of the most important drivers of economic growth and job
creation across the world. However, we need to manage globalisation so that
the benefits are shared fairly. That means ensuring that trade creates
decent work for all, with trade and employment policy working hand in hand.
As the new study shows, trade and employment policy coherence is essential
to help workers and labour markets adjust to changing patterns of global
trade. We need to deepen our understanding of how trade agreements affect
labour markets and the quality of jobs, especially in poorer countries.
This requires reliable information and indicators to help poorer countries
plan the right social and employment policies to maximise the benefits of
trade opening and support the most vulnerable into decent jobs.
[07] December 2006 compared to November 2006 - Construction output up by
0.5% in the euro area and the EU25
In the construction sector, seasonally adjusted production grew by 0.5% in
both the euro area (EA12) and the EU25 in December 2006, compared to the
previous month. In November 20063, production increased by 0.6% in the euro
area and by 0.5% in the EU25. Compared to December 2005, output in December
2006 gained 6.9% in the euro area and 6.7% in the EU25, after a rise of
5.9% in both zones in November 2006. The average construction output index
for 2006, compared to 2005, increased by 4.1% in the euro area and by 4.0%
in the EU25.
These first estimates are released by Eurostat.
