[01] Louis Michel to visit Lebanon and Israel, 14-17 August 2006
Louis Michel, the European Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian
Aid, will visit Lebanon on 14-16 August and Israel on 17 August. In Beirut,
he will meet Prime Minister Fouad Siniora and other members of the Lebanese
government. He will also meet aid workers and visit centres for internally
displaced people (IDPs) to learn directly about the humanitarian priorities
and practical challenges. In Tel Aviv, Mr Michel will meet the Vice Prime
Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tzipi Livni, and the Deputy Prime
Minister and Minister of Defence, Amir Peretz. Commissioner Michel said
"Secure humanitarian access to victims of the conflict and an end to
hostilities – these are the top priorities that I will address during my
visit."
[02] Mergers: Commission clears proposed acquisition of BP’s Dormagen
business by Ineos
The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation, the
proposed acquisition by the UK-based company, Ineos, of BP’s Ethylene
Oxide/Ethylene Glycol business in Dormagen, Germany. In December 2005, the
Commission approved Ineos’s purchase of BP’s Innovene subsidiary olefin
and refining business except the Dormagen business (“BP Dormagen”). The
Commission’s preliminary investigation raised serious concerns as to the
compatibility of the Ineos/BP Dormagen concentration with the Single
Market. However, the Commission’s in-depth investigation concluded that
the proposed concentration would not significantly impede competition in
the European Economic Area (EEA) or a substantial part of it.

[04] EU helps Spain to tackle forest fires
This morning (Wednesday, 9th August), Spain requested European civil
protection assistance to help combat the forest fires raging in more that
100 places in the region of Galicia. The request triggered a rapid response
from the Monitoring and Information Centre (MIC) of the European
Commission. The MIC immediately alerted the civil protection authorities of
the 30 countries participating in the Community Civil Protection Mechanism.
Within a few hours, Spain received additional fire-fighting airplanes, fire
fighters and vehicles from several European Member States. Italy, Portugal
and France were the first to provide civil protection assistance through
the Community Mechanism.
