[01] European citizens in favour of a European Energy policy, says
Eurobarometer survey
A majority of EU citizens (47%) would prefer European level decisions on
the new energy challenges such as energy supply security, growing energy
consumption and climate change, 37% and 8% prefer energy decisions on a
national or local level respectively. This is one of the conclusions of a
Eurobarometer poll presented today by European Energy Commissioner Andris
Piebalgs. Those people asked would choose renewable energy and R&D as the
means to tackle such problems and are willing to learn how to use energy
more efficiently. "The message from the citizens is a clear one – energy
is a concern for all Europeans and people expect clear and concrete actions
on all political levels. Europe needs a real energy policy focused on
security of supply, competitiveness and sustainability", said Commissioner
Piebalgs.
Commission.
[03] Markos Kyprianou visits Turkey to support efforts in tackling avian
influenza (25-27/01)
The European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Protection, Markos
Kyprianou, will visit Turkey from 25-27 January to reinforce EU solidarity
with Turkey in its fight against avian influenza. Mr Kyprianou's visit
follows up on his constructive discussions with the Turkish Agriculture
Minister Mr Mehmet Mehdi Eker, held during the international pledging
conference in Beijing last week. During his time in Ankara, Mr Kyprianou
will also meet Health Minister Recep Akdag, and the authorities responsible
for dealing with the control of the outbreaks of avian influenza on the
ground. The Commissioner will present an EU team of high-level veterinary
experts who will provide support and advice on the control and eradication
of the disease. Commissioners Olli Rehn (Enlargement) and Kyprianou are
working together to prepare a Commission decision to urgently bring forward
approximately €8 million in pre-accession funds for Turkey specifically
to confront the current avian influenza situation.
[04] Avian influenza : EU extends ban on captive bird imports and prolongs
restrictions for pet birds
The European Commission will extend the ban on imports of captive live
birds, other than poultry for commercial purposes, until 31 May 2006,
following a positive opinion by Member States in the Standing Committee on
the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCFCAH) today. The embargo is part of the
series of EU preventative measures against avian influenza, and has been
prolonged today as a result of the current situation in Turkey and other
countries where the disease is still present. The extension of the ban also
means that it will now cover the spring migration period, when migrating
birds will return to their nesting grounds. There are certain derogations
from the captive birds import ban. Birds are allowed to be moved between
approved zoos and similar institutions, and hatching eggs of non-poultry
birds can be imported for use in authorised hatcheries if their shells are
decontaminated upon arrival, or if they are being sent to zoos. The
Standing Committee also agreed today to extend, until the end of May,
restrictions on the movement of birds accompanying their owners (pet birds)
from third countries. These restrictions include an entry limit of five
birds per accompanying owner and strict quarantine requirements for these
birds (either 30-days quarantine in approved third countries, or 30-days
quarantine in the Member State of destination). As an alternative to
quarantine, the pet birds may be admitted if they have been vaccinated
against avian influenza, or have tested negative for the disease during a
ten day isolation period prior to movement. The restrictions for birds
accompanying their owners do not apply to pet birds entering the EU from
Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein Andorra, Iceland, Greenland, Faeroe
Islands and San Marino.
[05] November 2005 compared to October 2005 : industrial new orders up by
4.9% in euro-zone ; EU25 up by 3.4%
The euro-zone industrial new orders index increased by 4.9% in November
2005 compared to October 2005. The index fell by 0.6% in October and rose
by 1.7% in September. EU25 new orders increased by 3.4% in November 2005,
after remaining stable in October and rising by 0.6% in September. In
November 2005 compared to November 2004, industrial new orders increased by
9.2% in the euro-zone and by 9.3% in the EU25. These estimates are released
by Eurostat.
