Les principaux avantages commerciaux qu'elles en tirent sont notamment la possibilité de recruter de la main-d'oeuvre parmi un éventail plus large de travailleurs et de maintenir plus longtemps en poste les meilleurs d'entre eux, d'établir des relations communautaires plus solides et de donner une meilleure image de l'entreprise. Et pourtant, près de la moitié de toutes les entreprises ayant répondu à l'enquête doivent encore introduire une telle politique. Si les entreprises au nord et à l'ouest de l'Union européenne ont une plus longue habitude et expérience des politiques en faveur de la diversité, celles établies au sud de l'Europe et dans les nouveaux Etats membres insistent sur la nécessité de recevoir plus d'informations sur la manière d'introduire ces politiques. Le nouveau rapport met l'accent sur les politiques de la diversité qui favorisent l'absence de toute discrimination sur le lieu de travail pour des raisons d'origine ethnique ou raciale, de handicap, de religion ou de croyance, d'âge et d'orientation sexuelle.[02] Emissions trading : companies want longer-term certainty and predictabilityThe European Commission has released first highlights of a recent stakeholder consultation on the EU emissions trading scheme, which attracted over 300 responses. One of the main findings is that companies across sectors demand longer-term certainty and predictability about the scheme and in particular the allocation of emission allowances. The more certainty and lead-time they have, the easier it will be for them to invest in the right technologies for the future. The results of the consultation are feeding into an ongoing review of the emissions trading scheme. The scheme aims to cost-effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions from industrial and power plants.[03] Slovakia joins Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERMII)At the request of the Slovak authorities, euro zone ministers together with the European Central Bank, the ministers and the central bank governors of Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Slovenia and Slovakia decided on 25 November to include the Slovak koruna in ERM II. The central rate of the Slovak koruna was set at 1 euro = 38.4550 koruna. The decision was taken by mutual agreement and followed a procedure involving the European Commission. Seven of the ten countries that joined the European Union in 2004 are now members of ERM II. [04] Implementating the EU Landfill Directive : joint conference by the European Commission and Committee of the RegionsThe European Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas will be the keynote speaker at a Brussels conference on implementation of the EU Landfill Directive on 30 November. The conference is being organised jointly by the European Commission and the Committee of the Regions and will be held at the Borschette conference centre. The Landfill Directive, which entered force in 2001, sets detailed technical standards for waste landfills with the aim of preventing and minimising negative effects on the environment, such as soil and water pollution and emissions of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. It also requires a phased reduction in the amount of biodegradable waste dumped in landfills. Commissioner Dimas commented : "The Landfill Directive can significantly reduce the impacts of waste management if it is well implemented. Regional and local authorities play a crucial role in its implementation, which is why I greatly appreciate the cooperation with the Committee of the Regions in this area."[05] Joe Borg outlines the role of regions and cities under Euro- Mediterranean PartnershipAddressing the Euromed Regions and Cities Conference at the Euro- Mediterranean Summit in Barcelona, on 26 November, Joe Borg, European Commissioner for Fisheries and Maritime Affairs, outlined the role of regions and cities in the successful implementation of the measures taken under the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership. In his speech, Commissioner Borg focused on the important contribution that the joint commitment of regions and cities around the Mediterranean Sea could make in achieving the objectives set under this Partnership. He therefore invited them to become actively engaged "in the consultations on a future all-embracing maritime policy.
