[02] Commission expresses regret on the death of Sudanese Vice-President Garang

The European Commission expressed today its "deep regret" on learning of the tragic death of the Sudanese Vice-President John Garang in a helicopter crash. The Commissioner for Development and Humanitarian Aid, Louis Michel, said that he "met several times Mr Garang and had the highest respect for him, notably in the decisive role he played in the conclusion in January of a comprehensive peace agreement ending more than 20 years of civil war in South Sudan." The Commissioner added : "It is now essential that other Sudanese statesmen work together to meet the challenge of continuing his work and consolidating the peace process".

[04] Commission clears acquisition of Treofan by Goldman Sachs

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of sole control of Treofan Germany GmbH & Co. KG (Treofan) by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (Goldman Sachs) of the US. Goldman Sachs is a global investment banking, securities and investment firm. Treofan manufactures and markets flexible plastic packaging materials for consumer goods and industry applications. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[05] Commission clears acquisition of new joint venture by G+J and Vecerniji

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of JV, a newly created undertaking constituting a joint venture by Gruner+Jahr International Publishing Holding GmbH (G+J) of Germany, belonging to the German Bertelsmann group, and Vecerniji List d.d. (Vecerniji) of Croatia, belonging to Styria Medien AG (Styria), of Austria. G+J is a holding company for the management and coordination of subsidiaries and licences. Its immediate parent company, Gruner+Jahr KG (G+J KG) is active in publishing newspapers and magazines within the German Bertelsmann group. Bertelsmann publishes newspapers, magazines and books. Vecerniji is active in Croatia publishing newspapers and one magazine title. Styria, its parent company, publishes newspapers and magazines in Austria and Slovenia. G+J and Vecerniji will create and jointly control JV to which they intend to transfer the one magazine title currently published by Vecernij and some publishing rights of various other titles. JV will publish these magazines in the Croatian language, will sell them mainly in Croatia and will develop new concepts for magazines to be published in Croatia. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[06] Commission clears acquisition of FDITG by SITA and Flughafen Düsseldorf

The European Commission has granted clearance under the EU Merger Regulation to the acquisition of joint control of Flughafen Düsseldorf Informationstechnologie GmbH (FDITG) Germany by SITA Information Networking Computing BV (SITA) of The Netherlands and Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH of Germany. SITA is a Dutch company active in the provision of information and telecommunications services to global air transport and related industries. Flughafen Düsseldorf and its subsidiaries operate airports in Düsseldorf and Mönchengladbach. FDITG is an existing company currently 100% controlled by Flughafen Düsseldorf and following the transaction it will concentrate on the provision of information technology (IT) infrastructure and related services at Düsseldorf airport, in particular the operation of telecommunication networks and services. The operation was examined under the simplified merger review procedure.

[07] Commission clears planned acquisition of Royal P&O Nedlloyd by AP Møller, subject to conditions

The European Commission has cleared under the EU Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of the shipping company Royal P&O Nedlloyd (PONL) by AP Møller-Maersk A/S (Maersk). The Commission's clearance is conditional upon the divestiture of PONL's business on the trade between Europe and South Africa and the withdrawal of PONL from several conferences and consortia. In light of the commitments, the Commission has concluded that the transaction will not significantly impede effective competition in the European Economic Area or any part of it.

[09] Signature of the protocol to the Ankara Agreement (29/07)

The European Commissioner for Enlargement, Olli Rehn, stated on 30 July : ''Yesterday's signature by the EU - Presidency and Commission - and Turkey of the additional protocol to the Ankara Agreement is a welcome development. This will extend the EU-Turkey customs union to all new Member States, including the Republic of Cyprus. Together with the entry into force of six important pieces of legislation (which occurred on 1 June), the signature of the additional protocol was referred to in the conclusions of the December 2004 European Council as a step to be taken before the opening of accession negotiations with Turkey. The signature therefore should clear the way for the opening of accession negotiations with Turkey on 3 October, on the basis of the negotiating framework to be agreed by the Council, for which a proposal was presented by the Commission on 29 June. At the time of signature, Turkey issued a declaration, in particular relating to Cyprus, which the EU will examine carefully, for example, to see if there are any legal implications. Our preliminary assessment is that the declaration does not call into question Turkey's commitment to implement the protocol, which is essential. It is particularly important that Turkey confirms its continued commitment to support efforts for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem."
