[04] EU aviation agreements with Australia and New Zealand

Today, the European Commission announced new EU aviation agreements with Australia and New Zealand. These agreements will make sure that any EU airline can fly to Australia and New Zealand under the existing bilateral agreements between the two countries and EU Member States. Existing air services agreements must not discriminate based on the nationality of the EU carrier. These agreements now need the approval of the Council of Ministers. Vice-President Jacques Barrot, in charge of transport, said : "This is an important step in our external aviation policy. All EU airlines must be able to benefit from the existing agreements between EU Member States and Australia and New Zealand. Both countries have expressed an interest in more global negotiations on aviation, to which I intend to react positively."

[06] Commission welcomes progress of Brenner Base tunnel projectA coordination meeting was held in Brussels on 22 June 2005 on the Brenner base tunnel. The Brenner base tunnel is a transalpine tunnel which will connect Austria and Italy and allow for a substantial increase in transalpine freight traffic by rail. The meeting with all parties involved allowed to measure the positive results achieved so far and the remaining works to be done in order to finalise the project by 2006 and decide upon launching the construction phase.

[08] Preparation for the Environment Council (24/06, Luxembourg)

The last Environment Council under Luxembourg Presidency will take place on 24Â June in Luxembourg. As usual, the Council has a long agenda which feature possible political agreements on a new groundwater directive and on the INSPIRE initiative (Infrastructure for Spatial Information in the European Union). Ministers will hold a policy debate on the proposed REACH reform of chemicals legislation. The Council will vote on a package of proposals regarding GMOs : the lifting of safeguard clauses in five Member States and the authorisation of GM maize MON863. Council conclusions are expected on a new mercury strategy and on international rules for the dismantling of end of life ships. Over lunch, ministers will discuss climate change. A joint press conference by the President, Luxembourg Environment Minister Lucien Lux, and European Environement Commissioner Stavros Dimas is foreseen during the Council.
