of today's Commission meeting
[01] EU strengthens fight against piracy and counterfeiting beyond its
borders
In an effort to halt the increase in piracy and counterfeiting the European
Commission has adopted a strategy for the enforcement of intellectual
property rights in third countries. The action plan focuses on vigorous and
effective implementation and enforcement of existing IPR laws. It proposes
to identify priority countries where enforcement actions should be
concentrated. Stress will be put on technical cooperation and assistance to
help third countries fight counterfeiting but the Commission will not
hesitate to trigger all bilateral and multilateral sanction mechanisms
against any country involved in systematic violations. The Commission will
foster awareness raising of users and consumers in third countries and
support the creation of public-private partnerships for enforcement.
[02] Commission issues first report on the state of practical preparations
for the further enlargement of the euro area
The European Commission today issued its first report on the state of
practical preparations for the euro in the new Member States. Following the
enlargement of the European Union, the adoption of the euro constitutes the
next major step in the further integration of the new Member States. The
report shows that all ten new EU States wish this to happen between 2007
and 2010. Three of them have already joined the EU's Exchange Rate
Mechanism and a higher number have launched a selection procedure for the
design of the national side of the euro. The introduction of the euro in
the new countries should be faster and even smoother that in the current
eurozone members since an average of around 50% of the population has
already used euro notes and coins. But there is no room for complacency. It
took six years to prepare the current participating Member States for the
euro and although most citizens in the new countries are familiar with the
notes and coins they need to be prepared and reassured that the transition
will be smooth and to their benefit.

La Commission européenne a présenté la première édition du "Manuel
européen d'intégration" aux ministres des Etats membres chargés de
l'immigration, lors de la conférence interministérielle sur la politique
d'intégration organisée par la présidence néerlandaise à Groningue.
[04] Cambodia Commission allocates €3.5 million in humanitarian aid in
response to "child survival crisis"
The European Commission has allocated €3.5 million to improve the health
situation of vulnerable children in Cambodia. Activities will promote
access to safe water and improve hygiene conditions for vulnerable groups
thereby reducing infant and child mortality which remains very high in
Cambodia. Demining activities will also be funded. Funds will be channelled
through the European Commissions Humanitarian Aid Directorate General
(ECHO) under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson.
