  • [01] ASEM 5 Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam (07-09/10)

President Romano Prodi and Commissioner Pascal Lamy will attend the Asia- Europe Meeting - the ASEM 5 Summit - in Hanoi, Vietnam 7-9th October 2004. The Summit will celebrate the enlargement of ASEM to include 39 partners, including the 10 new members of the EU, and 3 new members on the Asian side: Cambodia, Laos and Burma/Myanmar. The Summit is thus a landmark in Asia-Europe relations. Discussions will cover political, economic and cultural issues of interest to both sides, and look forward to a new phase of development of the ASEM relationship. In parallel with the Summit, Pascal Lamy will discuss with his Vietnamese counterpart the EU-Vietnam bilateral deal for Vietnam's accession to the WTO, where significant progress has been made in recent months.

[03] Commission clears acquisition by tobacco manufacturing group Altadis of Italy's tobacco distribution company, Etinera

The European Commission has granted regulatory approval to the acquisition of Etìnera by the Spanish logistics company Logista, belonging to the tobacco manufacturing group Altadis. Etìnera is the monopolist distribution company for tobacco products in Italy and is currently owned by the British American Tobacco group. The Commission considers that, in the light of the limited position of Altadis in the upstream market for tobacco products in Italy, the operation does not raise competition concerns.

    [06] EU-Seychelles renew fisheries protocol

The European Commission, on behalf of the European Union, and the Seychelles have initialled a new 6-year fisheries protocol to their fisheries agreement, from 18 January 2005 to 17 January 2011. This protocol reflects the EU move from traditional fisheries agreements to fisheries partnership agreements based on cooperation and dialogue to achieve sustainable fisheries in the waters of the partner country concerned. In this context, Seychelles will reduce the fishing effort of tuna long liners by 15% by 2006. The EU financial compensation has gone up from €3.4 million to 4.125 million a year. Almost 40% of this amount has been earmarked for promoting responsible fishing, particularly through control, monitoring and enforcement activities. Licence fees paid by vessel owners have been increased by 50% to €15,000 for seiners, and to €2,250 and 3, 000 for long liners. The number of tuna seiners remains the same at 40 while the number of long liners will be reduced from 27 to 12, reflecting the targeted cut in fishing effort by this category of vessels. Fishing possibilities increase, on the average over the last three years, from 46, 000 to 55,000 tonnes. EU vessels fishing under this agreement come from Spain, France, Portugal, Italy and the United Kingdom.
