[01] Safe food in an EU of 25 Member States : final steps towards
enlargement on 1 May
The 10 new Member States due to join the EU on 1 May 2004 are on course to
meet the EU's food safety standards, said European Commissioner David Byrne,
responsible for Health and Consumer Protection today. "Major progress has
been made as a result of strong collaboration between the Commission and
the competent authorities of the new Member States". Some food
establishments (processing plants, dairies and abattoirs) will need some
transitional time to finish upgrading their standards. During that time,
their products will only be sold on the domestic market of the new Member
States concerned. The EU-15 agreed today to the final list of
establishments which will benefit from such an upgrading period.
Additionally, the Commission made details available today on 37 new Border
Inspection Posts which will start operating as of 1 May at the new borders
to control incoming veterinary products from third countries.
[02] TRACES : Commission adopts new system to manage animal movements and
prevent the spread of animal diseases
The European Commission has just introduced TRACES, a new IT system
designed to improve the management of animal movements both from outside
the EU and within the EU. TRACES will consolidate and simplify existing
systems and create better tools for managing animal disease outbreaks. All
those concerned by animal trade authorities and economic operators will
benefit from this modern web-based system, the first EU-wide e-government
application in the field of food safety.
[03] Commission clears acquisition of FLS Aerospace by SR Technics
The European Commission has approved the acquisition of the Danish company
FLS Aerospace by SR Technics (SRT). Both companies are active in the
aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) business. The analysis of
the transaction has confirmed the highly competitive nature of the market
and has shown that consumers will continue to benefit from sufficient
choice in the sector.
[04] Commission clears acquisition of SMART by TPG and Francisco Partners
The European Commission has granted clearance under the Merger Regulation
to the acquisition of joint control of the US undertaking SMART Modular
Technologies Inc. by the US undertakings Francisco Partners L.P. and TPG
Advisors III-IV, Inc., T3 Advisors II Inc. (The operation, notified on 8
March 2004, was examined under the simplified merger review procedure).
[05] Commission accepts divestiture proposals submitted by AB Volvo
The European Commission informed Swedish truck maker AB Volvo that the sale
of AB Scania B-shares to Deutsche Bank amounts to a divestiture. The
Commission also accepts the sale of AB Scania A-shares - which carry most
voting rights - to Volvo's shareholders provided a number of conditions
detailed in a letter to Volvo are fulfilled. Given the market sensitivity
of this information and the pending Volvo general shareholder meeting on 16
April, a non-confidential version of the letter will be published on the
Commission's competition website on that date.
