  • [01] Commission proposes common rules for adding vitamins and minerals to foods

The European Commission has today proposed a Regulation setting out common rules for the voluntary addition of vitamins, minerals and other substances such as herbal extracts to foods. The proposed legislation would harmonise the different rules in Member States and allow the free movement throughout the EU of foods "fortified" with nutrients. It would also create a list of approved vitamins, minerals and other substances. Minimum and maximum levels for adding different nutrients to foods would be set following scientific advice and labelling would show consumers which nutrients have been added to each product. The proposal will be adopted under the so- called co-decision procedure.

[03] 2/3 of EU citizens support a European Constitution

67% of citizens in the enlarged EU support the idea of a European Constitution according to a "Flash Eurobarometer" on the Convention and on the Intergovernmental Conference. 84% consider it "essential" or "useful" to give their opinion on the future Constitution by referendum. Poll results generally show large support for various institutional proposals made by the Convention and differ little from the June 2003 results. However, only five countries out of the 25 surveyed have more than 50% of respondents who state that they have heard about the Convention, compared to ten countries out of 25 in June.

    [05] EU-Indonesia trade support programme

The European Commission has approved €8.5 million for a programme to support the economic and social recovery of Indonesia by improving bilateral trade flows with the EU, thus stimulating growth and contributing to poverty alleviation. In order to achieve its objective, the initiative aims to help foster a business environment favourable to enhancing EU- Indonesia economic relations. A substantial amount of technical assistance will be provided to this end. In particular, the programme will focus on the following technical and regulatory issues : WTO Capacity Building, harmonisation of EU Standards, research and development institutes and fishing laboratories.

[06] Reform of raw tobacco, olive oil and cotton regime : Franz Fischler consults with sector

On 10 and 11 November, the European Commission will hold a stakeholder seminar on the Commission's proposals to reform organisation of the raw tobacco, olive oil and cotton markets. The Commission has invited representatives of the sectors and the most concerned regions to voice their opinion on its proposals and to discuss them with Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler and Commission officials. This seminar forms part of the preparation of the legal reform proposals the Commission will table later this month.

[07] Anna Diamantopoulou addresses European Social Fund national seminar in Italy

Anna Diamantopoulou, European Commissioner for Employment and Social Affairs, has today addressed a seminar in Italy on the European Social Fund. The seminar is being held as part of the ESF's mid-term review process and looks at lessons learnt so far in this programing period (since 2000), what are the priorities until 2006 and what can the ESF contribute in the next financial period from 2007.
