[02] Commission clears acquisition of sole control over STN Atlas by Rheinmetall

The European Commission has approved under the Merger Regulation the proposed acquisition of sole control over the German manufacturer of electronic fire control systems STN Atlas by Rheinmetall, a German producer of military equipment. This merger does not raise any competition concerns on any of the markets considered.

[03] Commission clears acquisition of Cordiant by WPP

The European Commission has approved the acquisition of sole control by the UK WPP Group (WPP) of the UK Cordiant Communications Group (Cordiant). Analysis of the case revealed that post transaction marketing communications services will be subject to sufficient competition both at EEA as well as national levels.

[04] Commission clears joint acquisition of TNK-BP

The European Commission has cleared the acquisition of joint control by the undertakings BP p.l.c. (UK) ; Alfa Finance Holdings SA (Luxembourg) ; Access (USA) and Renova of TNK-BP, a pre-existing company currently joint controlled by Alfa, Access and Renova. TNK-BP is intended to be the primary vehicle for the parties' oil and gas interests in Russia and Ukraine. (The operation, notified on 26 June 2003, was examined under the simplified merger review procedure).

[05] WTO farm talks / Cancun : Franz Fischler calls for renewed effort to bridge differences

(! embargo 3 pm !) European Agriculture Commissioner Franz Fischler, following meetings today in Washington DC with United States Trade Representative Robert Zoellick and US Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman, underlined the importance of the US and the EU working together to make the Doha Developing Agenda (DDA) a success.

[06] EU Cohesion Policy in Slovakia : negotiations on the 2004-2006 programmes will start on 29 July in Bratislava

The European Commission today announced the launch of the first round of negotiations with Slovakia on future regional development programmes. Negotiations will start on 29 July in Bratislava. They will be dedicated to the Community Support Framework (CSF) and related Operational Programmes (OP) and Single Programming Documents (SPD) for the period 2004-2006. In a letter of 24 July addressed to Pal Csaky, Slovak Deputy Prime Minister, Michel Barnier, Commissioner responsible for regional policy set out the Commission's position on how Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund should be used in Slovakia.

[07] 100% testing requirement for imports of poultry meat from Thailand lifted

Since March 2002, all consignments of shrimps and poultry from Thailand had to be tested for the presence of residues since nitrofurans had been detected in imported products from this country (see IP/02/436). The action plan put in place by the Thai authorities to address the deficiencies and the results of the checks carried out by Member states have shown a major improvement in the situation. The authorities of Thailand have also guaranteed that all consignments of poultry meat are submitted to a systematic pre-shipment check to control the presence of nitrofurans and other residues since 21 September 2002. Therefore, the European Commission today adopted a Decision to reduce the frequency of the checks in the Member States to 20% of the consignments certified by the Thai authorities after the date of 21 September 2002. The requirement to test all consignments of shrimps imported from Thailand has already been lifted on 24 June 2003.
