[02] EU research project proves that personal choice can dramatically improve urban air quality

Stop smoking and leave your car at home. Encouraging people in cities to make simple lifestyle changes, such as using alternative forms of transport to the car, can significantly reduce their exposure to harmful air pollutants. The findings of the first in a series of Europe-wide air quality studies was announced today in Brussels by European Research Commissioner Philippe Busquin and Didier Gosuin, Environment Minister of the Brussels-Capital Region. The first phase of the "Population Exposure to Air Pollutants In Europe" (PEOPLE) project took place in Brussels during a 12-hour period last October, using 125 volunteers carrying special sensors to monitor their levels of exposure to benzene, a carcinogenic substance produced by traffic and smoking. Similar surveys have also been conducted in Lisbon, Bucharest and Ljubljana.

[03] June 2003 : the Business Climate Indicator for the euro area improved

The Business Climate Indicator (BCI) for the euro area increased slightly by 0.07 percentage points between May and June, reaching a value of -0.61. The recent evolution of the BCI indicates that the economic short-term outlook remains uncertain. This increase was mainly driven by an improvement in opinions about in recent and expected production trends, while export order books decreased slightly. Total order books and stocks of finished products remained unchanged.

[04] June 2003 : economic sentiment increased slightly in both the EU and the euro area

The economic sentiment indicator (ESI) recorded a slight increase in June for both the EU (0.2 percentage points) and the euro area (0.1), reaching a value of 98.5 and 98.2, respectively, thereby confirming the improvement since March. The small improvement of the ESI is the resultant of relatively small changes in the underlying components. In the euro area, the industrial and the consumer confidence indicator went up by 1 point while the retail confidence indicator fell by 1 point. For the EU as a whole, only the consumer and the construction confidence indicator changed ; the former increased by 1 point, while the latter declined by 1 point.

[06] Commission calls for concerted effort to promote social inclusion of Roma

European Employment and Social Affairs Commissioner, Anna Diamantopoulou, today called on current and future EU Member States to work together to tackle the social exclusion of Roma. She launched an appeal for greater cooperation between the EU, the World Bank and other international organisations. The Commissioner also stressed the need to boost dialogue with Roma representatives underlining there should be "nothing for Roma, without the Roma".

[07] India : Commission grants €1.95 million in humanitarian aid

The European Commission has approved €1.95 million in continued humanitarian assistance to vulnerable groups affected by conflict in Jammu and Kashmir. The emphasis is on providing health care, psychosocial support and education to both internally displaced people (IDPs) and the resident population. The funding is channelled through the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson. Programmes will
