[01] Commission expresses solidarity with victims of floods
In the name of the European Commission, President Romano Prodi expressed
his sympathy for the populations affected by the bad weather in Europe, in
particular Germany, Austria and Czech Republic, and especially for the
victims and their families. During telephone conversations with the
Austrian Chancellor Wolfgang Schüssel and the President of the Czech
Republic Vaclav Havel, President Prodi assured that the Commission was
exploring all the possibilities of financial solidarity of the EU with the
populations affected, notably through the EU Structural Funds and pre-
accession funds for the candidate countries. A similar telephone
conversation is scheduled for tomorrow Friday with the German Chancellor
Gerhard Schröder. A range of financial possibilities have been already
identified.
[02] Commission refers the assessment of Vía Digital's merger with
Sogecable to the Spanish Competition Authorities.
The Commission has decided to grant the referral requested by the Spanish
Competition Authorities with regard to the integration of the two satellite
digital television platforms operating in Spain. The operation, that
threatens to bring about anti-competitive effects in a number of markets
within Spain, will therefore be assessed by the Spanish authorities
according to this State's national competition law.
[03] Commission clears the acquisition of BauMineral Herten by Alsen and
E.ON
The European Commission has given the go-ahead for Alsen AG to acquire,
jointly with E.ON Kraftwerke GmbH, control over BauMineral Herten GmbH,
which is active in the processing and sale of mineral construction
materials that are by-products of electricity generation in coal-fired
power plants, in particular hard-coal fly ash ("Steinkohlenflugasche").
[04] Republic of Suriname: European Commission agrees €19.1 million
Cooperation Programme
The European Commission and the Government of Suriname have agreed a
Country Strategy document worth €19.1 million for the period 2002-2007. The
cooperation strategy is based on the principles of partnership and
ownership enshrined in the EU-ACP Cotonou Agreement, signed in June 2000.
This programme serves as a framework for relations with Suriname, covering
all aspects of aid to the country. The main objective is to support the
government's efforts to reduce poverty through sustainable economic and
social development. The main focus of the funds will be on the transport
sector.
[05] Trinidad and Tobago: Commission approves €17.9 million Cooperation
Programme
The European Commission and the Government of Trinidad and Tobago have
agreed a Country Strategy document worth €17.9 million for the period 2002-
2007. This programme serves as a framework for relations with Trinidad and
Tobago, covering all aspects of aid to the country. The main objective is
to support the government's efforts to reduce poverty through sustainable
economic and social development. The main focus of the funds will be
education and health. Welcoming the adoption, the Member of the Commission
responsible for development cooperation and humanitarian aid, Poul Nielson,
commented " This programme is the result of a common analysis of the
challenges faced by Trinidad and Tobago as well as the capacity of the EU
to effectively assist in the country's own efforts to meet those
challenges".
