[03] Commission approves insurance joint venture between Skandia (Sweden), Storebrand (Norway) and Pohjola (Finland) with conditions

The European Commission has approved the creation of a joint venture between the Swedish insurance group Försäkringsaktiebolaget Skandia, the Norwegian insurance group Storebrand ASA and the Finnish insurance group Pohjola-Yhtyuiä Vakuntus Oyj. The joint venture will become a new pan- Nordic provider of non-life (i.e. property and casualty or "P&C") insurance services. The operation will have only minor effects on competition in the Nordic countries, with the exception of Norway. However, Skandia has agreed to divest its Vesta Forsikring A/S subsidiary there, thus avoiding a further strengthening of Storebrand's market position.

[04] European Union population up slightly last year (Embargo 12h)

A report today out jointly from Eurostat, Statistical Office of the European Communities in Luxembourg, and the Council of Europe says the European Union's (EU) population grew slightly, by 0.2%, last year to stand at 375,329,400 (291,381,500 in the euro-zone). All EU Member States witnessed a rise in total population, except Germany with a 19,400 fall, made up of a 70,200 drop in its natural increase balanced by 50,800 net migrants. The report says many central and eastern European countries again saw population falls, either from natural causes or net migration outflows. For example, the Ukraine's population fell by 394,300 a 300,700 natural decrease and the rest net migration outflow. By contrast, the USA's population rose by 2,369,400 to reach 271,465,000. The population of China was up by 10,000,000 to stand at 1,242,000,000 and India's by 17,000,000, reaching 992,000,000. EU15 accounted for only 1.0% of the world population increase last year. This compares with 21.7% for India and 13.2% for China. The average EU woman now has 1.45 children (1.39 in the euro-zone). The high is Ireland's 1.94, the low Spain's 1.15. These figures compare with 2.07 in the USA, 1.80 in China and 3.24 in India. Infant mortality continues to fall throughout Europe. A rate of fewer than five deaths of infants under one year per 1,000 live births was seen last year in Germany, France, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The 'safest' place for a baby to be born is Sweden with a rate of only 3.5. Life expectancy continues to increase. EU babies born in 1998 can expect to live 80.8 years if they're girls and 74.5 if they're boys. This compares with 79.6 and 76.1 in the USA, 83.3 and 80.0 in Japan, 63.7 and 62.9 in India and 71.1 and 68.3 in China.
