[01] Hans van den Broek reacts to Turkish Court decision on Abdullah Öcalan
Hans van den Broek, European Commissioner responsible for External
Relations, has taken note of the decision of the Turkish Court regarding
Abdullah Öcalan. Mr van den Broek reiterates that the European Union (EU)
opposes the death penalty, and reckons that the relevant authorities in
Turkey take the EU's position into account with regard to the follow up of
the Court's decision today.

Omnium spécialisée dans les équipements intérieurs automobiles en plastique
La Commission européenne a autorisé la société américaine Ford Motor
Company (Ford) à prendre le contrôle exclusif de la division "équipements
intérieurs automobiles en plastique" du groupe français Compagnie Plastic
Omnium. Le secteur économique concerné par cette opération de concentration
est celui des équipements automobiles et, plus précisément, des équipements
intérieurs automobiles en plastique. La Commission a considéré que cette
opération ne créerait ni ne renforcerait de position dominante et l'a
déclarée compatible avec le marché commun.
[03] Commission authorises the acquisition by Computer Associates of
Platinum (both USA)
The European Commission has authorised an operation whereby Computer
Associates International Inc. acquires sole control of the company Platinum
Technology International Inc. Given the companies' position on the market
the operation will raise no competition concern.
[04] 18 millions de PME dans l'UE
(! embargo 12h !) L'Union européenne (UE) compte 18 millions de petites et
moyennes entreprises (PME), qui emploient 66% de la main-d'œuvre et
assurent 55% du chiffre d'affaires. Elles représentent 99,8% de l'ensemble
des entreprises marchandes non agricoles. C'est ce qu'indique un volume
intitulé "Les entreprises en Europe, cinquième rapport", publié ce jour par
Eurostat, l'Office statistique des Communautés européennes à Luxembourg. Au
milieu des années 90, le nombre des entreprises nouvellement créées était
supérieur au nombre de fermetures dans la plupart des Etats membres de
l'UE. Le nombre de créations d'entreprises a dépassé le nombre de
fermetures dans des proportions allant de 6,3% en Italie (1996) à 66,7% aux
Pays-Bas (1994). Le Royaume-Uni est le seul pays où le nombre de fermetures
a été plus élevé (de 5,5% en 1995) que le nombre de créations
d'entreprises. Selon une "estimation prudente" du rapport, près de 2
millions de "nouvelles" entreprises ont fait leur apparition au milieu des
années 90, soit quelque 12% du nombre total d'entreprises de l'UE. Par
ailleurs, de 1,6 million à 1,8 million (soit 9 à 10% du nombre total) ont
"disparu" chaque année.
[05] Franz Fischler gives outlook on the impact of Agenda 2000
In a speech given at the Agra Europe Special Conference in Brussels today,
European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Franz Fischler,
gave an outlook on the implications of the Agenda 2000 on the markets,
enlargement and trade talks. He stressed the Agenda's strong impact on
increasing the competitiveness of European agriculture and the important
introduction of rural development as second pillar of the Common
Agriculture Policy. Regarding enlargement, Mr Fischler pointed out the
positive effects of the Agenda 2000 for the prospective new Member States,
in particular the intensification and extension of pre-accession aid.
Commenting on the new World Trade Organisation-rounds, Mr Fischler said :
"Strategies of retreat into an agricultural fortress Europe would clearly
be at odds with the developments of the last decade and would turn out to
be a dead end for our agricultural economy". He expects hard fights for the
maintainance of the so-called "blue box" and also highlighted some other
important new issues like the recognition of the mulitfunctional role of
agriculture, in particular the relationship between agriculture, trade and
environment, standards for health and safety, animal welfare, labelling and
consumer information. "With a consensus at European Union level, I think we
can go into the talks with a certain amount of confidence in continuing
down the path of trade liberalisation", Mr Fischler concluded.
